Hell is more than fire and darkness. Hell is the unbearable suffering of being alone. | AI-Generated Image from ChatGPT
What is the most terrifying punishment of hell? Is it the unquenchable fire? Is it the darkness? Or is it the most painful reality of being utterly alone?
For some people, the idea of being alone may not seem like the worst suffering. On the contrary, it could have been their subconscious goal at some point in their lives.
Haven’t we all felt annoyed so much that all we ever wanted was to be left alone? Or have we not experienced being pressured by others that we wanted to be by ourselves to be free from their influence?
Of course, those are far different from being left entirely with ourselves for all eternity. But if thoughts such as these are allowed to linger and grow, we could eventually be our greatest enemy.
Because hell is more than fire and darkness. Hell is the unbearable suffering of being alone.
The Role of Technology in Isolation
In recent years, technology has brought us a lot of comfort. It made things like shopping, working, education and entertainment more convenient. In some ways, especially during the COVID pandemic, it has even allowed us to attend religious services online.
But in exchange for these comforts, is technology also pushing us towards isolation?
No longer do we have to go out shopping for our groceries when we can order online. But instead of meeting people, we remain alone in front of our mobile devices.
No longer do we have to attend some meetings in person. But it has resulted in living behind our screens instead of meeting people face-to-face.
Even our preferences are quickly being influenced by technology. It has changed our leisure time from family or peer gatherings to being alone in front of our computer screens, choosing the shows we want to watch on our own.
Is it any wonder why we experience more and more anxiety today? We may not be aware of it. But our deeper problem could be that of loneliness.
An Earthly Glimpse of the Pain of Loneliness
We all have an idea of what it feels like to be alone.
We feel it when we grieve for the loss of someone dear to us.
We suffer when we feel invisible even amid the crowd.
Something breaks inside of us whenever we are misjudged or pushed aside.
Even when we are not aware of it, we suffer much when we are alone.
God Did Not Make Us To Be Alone
From the very beginning, God never intended for us to be alone. He made us for love and communion. And we were meant to love and to be loved.
“The Lord God said: It is not good for the man to be alone.” – Genesis 2:18 (NABRE)
Even the God that we Christians worship is not alone. He may be One, but He is not alone. And that is the mystery of the Trinity. For God is Love. And where there is love, we are never alone.
Sin and Being Alone
The happiness of paradise ended with man’s fall because of sin.
Sin says that we choose something else instead of God.
Sin says that we prefer to be alone in our evil deeds instead of being in a loving relationship with others and with God.
It was sin that separated human beings from everything that could ever make us happy and complete. And it is sin that could once again bring us to the suffering of being alone forever in hell.
God Enters Our Loneliness
While we live in an imperfect world with sin, we need not lose hope.
Jesus Christ has chosen to draw near to us and to save us from our eternal separation. He came that we may have eternal life.
Have you ever thought about how much God has pursued you?
He came down from heaven, suffered on the way to His crucifixion and even died so that you and I may be reconciled in everlasting love.
Heaven is what God desires for us, not hell. Love is the answer that can heal our deepest loneliness.
Choosing Heaven Today
God knows our loneliness, and He knocks today so that He may commune with you and be your Friend.
We can continue to live our lives isolated from everyone. But we can also choose to let Jesus in. We can choose to let love in and allow that love to change our lives.
Relationships may not be easy or convenient. They demand time, devotion and sacrifices on our part.
But it isn’t the small conveniences in this life that could give us purpose, peace and happiness.
Only love can save us from eternal loneliness. And whenever we choose to love, we also start to choose heaven today.
