Compared to the martyrs and saints who offered extraordinary sacrifices and even their very lives for God, we may feel that what we can offer is very little to God. As a result, we may not offer what we have at all. After all, won’t they be insignificant in the eyes of God?
But if we remember the story of Jesus feeding thousands of people, do we not recall how it all began with five loaves of bread and two fish?
“Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And all ate and were filled; and they took up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full.” – Matthew 14:19-20 (NRSVCE)
The world’s needs today may seem overwhelming. It could feel similar to the need to feed thousands of people with a limited supply. But we must remember that God doesn’t ask for what we don’t have. He blesses the little that we have and multiplies it a thousandfold for God’s kingdom.
Have you ever thought about some of the things you could offer Jesus today?
1. Inconveniences
Life is full of inconveniences. It could rain so suddenly while you’re on your way to work. There could be a sudden traffic jam. Or there could be a long line when you’re shopping for your groceries.
Instead of complaining about these things, why not offer them to God?
2. Worries
Many problems could be keeping you awake at night. Instead of sleeping, your mind is filled with anxious thoughts.
Is the budget going to be enough? Are the kids going to be okay? Will someone else be taking over my job?
As valid as our concerns may be, we can surrender them all to God. Aside from being an act of faith, offering them to God can also set us free and give us peace of mind.
3. Prayers
We can pray for the Church, the poor, our world leaders and other people who are in need.
Sometimes your prayers may seem imperfect as your mind struggles amid distractions. But be not discouraged. God sees our intentions and accepts the sincerity of our hearts.
4. Sickness
You may be sick and unable to get out of bed. Never think for a moment that you cannot offer anything to God.
Offer to Him your sickness and suffering. Offer all the pain that you endure.
Remember Christ crucified. United to His sacrifice, your suffering has great value in His eyes. It becomes a holy participation in His redeeming love.
5. Forgiveness
Was there someone who hurt you? Have you felt betrayed, misjudged or cast away? Did someone harm you in any way?
Instead of harboring resentment or vengeful thoughts, you can offer your pain to God. God alone can heal and restore you.
And you can trust Him to bring true justice in His own perfect time.
6. Repentance
You are not perfect yet. Along the way, you may fall. You may feel ashamed and you may think that you can no longer offer anything to God.
But through Jesus’ revelations to St. Faustina, He let us know that even then, we can offer something. When we feel weak and sinful, we can offer to Him our miseries and our contrite hearts. God accepts our repentance, humility and sincerity.
“For you, I am mercy itself; therefore, I ask you to offer Me your misery and this very helplessness of yours and, in this way, you will delight My Heart.” – Jesus to St. Faustina (Diary, 1775).
Offering Little Flowers to Jesus
St. Therese of Lisieux once said that she would offer flowers of small sacrifices out of love. It is not always what the world sees as great deeds that God asks from us.
It can be the patience we exercise when life is uncomfortable.
It can be our hidden prayers for those who are in need.
It can be the kindness we give to our enemies.
Quite often, what we can give is something we often saw as little. But then what is little if it is full of a heartfelt desire to love Jesus?
Five loaves of bread and two fish were enough to feed thousands of people. In the same way, you can place your little offerings of love in Jesus’ hands today. Let Him bless it and multiply it a thousandfold!
“Miss no single opportunity of making some small sacrifice, here by a smiling look, there by a kindly word; always doing the smallest right and doing it all for love.” – St. Therese of Lisieux
