We have often wondered what God wants us to do for the rest of our lives. What could be our life purpose? To what vocation are we being called by God?
These are very important to know. But there is another question that is just as significant:
What does God want me to do today?
Have you ever wondered what God wanted you to do just for the day?
We may be so busy thinking about the future that we forget about the present. We want to know God’s will for the next twenty years but we fail to discern His will for the next few hours.
Let us remember that God’s will is not only accomplished in the major decisions we make in life. It is fulfilled in the ordinary circumstances of each God-given moment.
That dream we’re yearning for is built with every small step we make each day. The change we want to happen is made through our daily choices and actions.
Today is more important than we often think it is.
Begin The Day In Prayer
It is very important to start the day in prayer. Seek His presence first. Get in touch with Jesus. Without prayer, you’d have neither the wisdom nor the strength to face your battles for the day.
Try to allot a fixed time for daily prayer in the morning. During that time, simply allow yourself to talk freely to the Lord. Thank Him for the gift of another day and for the life that He continues to bestow upon you.
Let your prayer fill you with all the love that you need. Let it heal you and strengthen you.
With prayer, you open yourself to receiving all that heaven wants to bestow upon you. This includes the guidance that you need as well as the power to accomplish the many tasks ahead.
Fulfill Your Duties For The Day
We all have our share of duties to perform for the day.
We may be busy in the office with work or fulfilling our duties as students. We may be serving the Church or helping in other social and charitable organizations. Most of all, we have our own duties at home whether as parents, siblings or children.
Fulfilling our duties will enable us to be a witness to God wherever we may be.
In a way, doing our work diligently shapes us, helps us grow and cultivates in us virtues that can prepare us for greater responsibilities in the future.
Trust and Love God
God wants us to trust Him in everything. With trust in God, it is said that we can accomplish even what seems impossible at first. Trusting in Him also takes away much of our worries and fears.
Above all else, we must never forget the love of God. Even in the smallest tasks, let us carry out every deed with love for God.
No day is in vain for as long as we have lived it loving God.
Love the People Around You
Sometimes we can be so preoccupied trying to reach our goals that we forget the people around us.
Who are the people you could get in touch with today? You could meet co-workers, classmates, neighbors, friends and strangers.
And then there is your family. How much attention do you give them each day?
God’s will could be as simple as loving the very people He allows you to encounter in your life. It’s in listening to someone in need, eating out with a friend, talking to your parents, playing with your children, or simply giving a wholehearted smile to a stranger who feels alone.
All of the commandments can be summarized into two. The first is to love God above all. And this is the second one. That we love our neighbors as we love ourselves.
“‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” – Matthew 22:37-40 (NRSVCE)
Keep An Open Mind
Not every day can go by exactly as we planned. Unforeseen things sometimes happen. Problems get in the way. Inconveniences arise.
But all such things can be opportunities to let God work in our lives.
Sometimes, what we thought to be a disruption could actually be a life-changing moment leading to ever greater blessings along the way.
Chance encounters, unplanned conversations, and new experiences could also help us discern God’s greater plan for our lives.
Keep your mind open to what God wants you to do today.
Rest When You Get Tired
Even Jesus withdrew from the crowd and spent time alone in rest and prayer. He knows we need this, too.
God did not create us merely to be productive. Life is more than work and the achievement of our goals.
Learn to spend some quiet time in rest and recreation. Laugh a little. Appreciate the beauty of nature. Get a good hobby. Enjoy a cozy time reading your favorite book.
God leads His sheep in quiet waters and green pastures. He allows them to rest. When you can no longer go on, let Him carry you upon His arms.
Leave The Rest To God
Even after we do our best, we could still make mistakes. Or we may not accomplish everything we wanted to do. We could also hurt other people.
When the day is done, it is time to place everything in the hands of God. Let us surrender our hurts and disappointments. Let us offer to Him our miseries and faults. And after a heartfelt repentance, let us accept the forgiveness He offers out of His merciful heart.
Living Your Life For God Today
In the end, today is all we have. We no longer hold the past. And the future has not yet come.
Let us offer the present moment to God and let Him help us every step of the way.
Our whole lifetime is built through many days like today. It is not insignificant. It is a gift we must cherish and make use of to the full.
If you want to know what God wants you to do with your life, you can begin by asking:
“What is God asking you to do today?”
“But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” – Matthew 6:33-34 (NRSVCE)
