7 Quick Takes Friday: The Political Rant Edition

Last updated on: January 11, 2015 at 4:56 pm   By Calah Alexander

Every election week is annoying. This one is even more so. I have, in fact, been so irritated all week by obnoxious people lacking any sense of common decency that today I’m going to use my blog as a platform to rant. Feel free to click away; I promise it won’t hurt my feelings. Without further ado, I bring you: seven people (or groups of people) who make me want to smack their heads my head against a wall. #7... Read more

On Poop and Humility

Last updated on: January 11, 2015 at 4:57 pm   By Calah Alexander

A few months ago, when I was still pregnant with Liam, my sister-in-law posted a note on facebook about poop. Here’s how she started it: A few days ago I was talking with a couple friends (non-parents) and I told them that since I’ve become a parent, my idea of what constitutes a good day has drastically changed. I used to think that if I got up early, did some exercise, checked off x number of things on my to... Read more

Halloween and Providence

Last updated on: January 11, 2015 at 4:58 pm   By Calah Alexander

We had the most fantastic Halloween ever this year. After two and a half years in Las Vegas, I’ve finally managed to drum up some friends and one of them (whose girls go to school with Sienna) invited us to go trick-or-treating with them, since trick-or-treating in an apartment complex is a total bummer. We were thrilled, of course, since the last two Halloweens have been a bust. Sienna asked me at least ten times every hour in the four... Read more

Milestone

Last updated on: January 11, 2015 at 5:05 pm   By Calah Alexander

I broke my big toe. It’s sideways and it hurts and it’s really swollen, and my children keep stepping on it and my husband keeps making fun of me. Mostly he’s making fun of me because I won’t stop talking about it, but the thing is, this is the first bone I’ve ever broken in my entire body in my entire life. And it freaking hurts. We actually had to pause The Breakfast Club because I was so concerned about... Read more

7 Quick Takes Friday!

Last updated on: January 11, 2015 at 5:07 pm   By Calah Alexander

Happy Friday before Halloween! I’m inordinately excited about this Halloween because we’ve banned sugar from the house…but of course that rule won’t apply to Halloween candy collected by earnest, hard-working little costumed beggars. From whom I will steal. Yay, candy! I’m actually having visions of mellowcreme pumpkins lure me to sleep at night. Yum. Sunday can’t get here fast enough. And now for quick takes. #7 My Toe hurts. I think it’s broken. I’m not sure how I broke it,... Read more

The Inappropriate Comment of the Day!

Last updated on: January 11, 2015 at 5:09 pm   By Calah Alexander

Today’s inappropriate comment is brought to you by my mother (who’s not a Catholic.) The great circumcision debate has been raging in our house since Liam made his appearance, leaving me with plenty of opportunities to practice the virtue of meekness and obedience. Most of those opportunities have been wasted, but more about that another day. We did finally go see a specialist for a circumcision consultation only to find out that Liam has a slight buried penis, which is... Read more

Akita

Last updated on: January 11, 2015 at 5:10 pm   By Calah Alexander

There are some things that make the experience of a convert really amazing. While I constantly feel several steps behind when cradle Catholics get going about the corporal works of mercy or St. John Chrysostom (or any other saint who’s not really in the familiar lexicon), it’s all worth it when I stumble across amazing, miraculous events that make Protestant in me want to shout “Hoax! Catholic trickery!”, but that the Catholic in me can accept with wonder and gratitude.... Read more

7 Quick Takes Friday: 7 Happiest Movies Ever Made

Last updated on: January 11, 2015 at 5:12 pm   By Calah Alexander

So to make up for yesterday’s really, really depressing post, today I’m going to fill your life with laughter and happiness. Well, I’m not actually going to do that, but I’m going to give you a list of movies that you can watch that will fill your life with laughter and happiness! The rules for this list are pretty simple. These movies are all funny-yes, you will laugh. Out loud. I hope. But they also all have sweet stories that... Read more

The Dragon

Last updated on: January 11, 2015 at 5:14 pm   By Calah Alexander

The Ogre and I are fighting. I hate it when we fight. It means that he’ll work late, we’ll barely speak all day, the girls and I will have grilled cheeses for dinner, and I won’t be able to randomly throw myself into his arms when he does come home. It also means that there will be an invisible line down the middle of our bed tonight that neither of us dare cross, me out of fear that he’ll think... Read more

Brillo Pads and Baby Boys

Last updated on: January 11, 2015 at 5:15 pm   By Calah Alexander

Last night, I changed a diaper. This diaper change was different than the countless diapers I’ve changed over the last five years. This diaper change was…well…disconcerting. Friends and family had warned me that sometimes, when you change a baby boy’s diaper, his tiny little boy part gets a tiny little…er…bounce in it’s step. It’s not that I didn’t believe them, it’s just that I tried not to think about it. And since it had not happened to me, it was... Read more
