Minion Monday

Last updated on: June 9, 2015 at 1:51 pm   By Calah Alexander

Blog-wise, Mondays are always a killer for me. Today is no exception, with the oldest minion down for the count and home sick with a sore throat that is, alas, not sore enough to keep her quiet. I may not be able to get any real think-blogging done on Mondays, but the minions are always good for a laugh or twelve, so I hereby designate Mondays intellectual property of the Alexander minions. Me: “Sienna, sometimes I think I’m so lucky... Read more

This Whole Medjugorje Thing

Last updated on: June 9, 2015 at 1:52 pm   By Calah Alexander

So the Vatican released this letter that is really important for the fate of Medjugorje and whether or not the apparitions will be approved. Or something. I’m not really sure. I can’t ever figure out what has happened, is happening, and might happen with this because I literally cannot read past this word: MEDJUGORJE Seriously, how do you say that? I’m sure it’s my American elitism and everything (although I’ve learned to pronounce plenty of unpronounceable names in my time,... Read more

Nuking the Modesty War, Part III: Stop Thingifying People

Last updated on: June 9, 2015 at 11:02 am   By Calah Alexander

“It’s not as simple as that. It’s not a black and white issue. There are so many shades of gray.” “Nope.” “Pardon?” “There’s no grays, only white that’s got grubby. I’m surprised you don’t know that. And sin, young man, is when you treat people as things. Including yourself. That’s what sin is. “It’s a lot more complicated than that –” “No. It ain’t. When people say things are a lot more complicated than that, they means they’re getting worried... Read more

Nuking the Modesty War, Part II: Stop Treating Men Like Pigs

Last updated on: June 9, 2015 at 11:02 am   By Calah Alexander

This series is a response to this post about the evils of yoga pants. You can find Part I here: Nuking the Modesty Wars, Part 1: Control Yourself, Not Women Dear Christian Women of the Internet: STOP TREATING MEN LIKE FERAL PIGS Seriously, even if they look at you with those big eyes that say, “it’s just so hard,” and “you don’t understand” and you feel really guilty because you don’t understand, don’t treat them like helpless lust-puppies. Don’t let... Read more

Nuking the Modesty War, Part I: Control Yourself, Not Women

Last updated on: June 9, 2015 at 11:03 am   By Calah Alexander

I saw this post on Facebook last week and I’ve been mulling over a rejoinder ever since. There is so much wrong with it that at first I thought it was too much to even bother with*. Plus, I’ve been over and over the modesty wheel. I’ve written snarky, insightful, and downright hilarious posts about the modesty war. There’s not much more I have to say about it. Except, dammit, there is. I’m fecking done dancing around this issue and... Read more

“Shhhh, My Mom is Sleeping”

Last updated on: September 19, 2015 at 2:42 pm   By Calah Alexander

I’m never one for those “motherhood is beautiful” inspiration cards, books, videos, or mugs. Motherhood usually feels anything but beautiful, and those rare moments when it does seem beautiful are too transcendent to be captured by trite sentimentalism. This one is different. It’s exceptionally well-done. Watch it. It would have been perfect if they had added a few times-outs and a little more yelling and crying. What? Honesty is the best medium for conveying beauty. But seriously, I’m grateful to... Read more

RIP, Thanksgiving

Last updated on: September 19, 2015 at 2:44 pm   By Calah Alexander

Thanksgiving is dead to me. I’m so done with it. Year after year, I cook this meal that’s totally elaborate and delicious, but year after year it’s never on the table on time, everything is chaos, dishes are everywhere, the children are alternately ignored and yelled at, my back hurts, my feet hurt, I’m crabby and stressed, I don’t enjoy dinner when we finally eat, and then after dinner there’s still hours of clean-up. Plus, Charlotte throws up at Thanksgiving... Read more
