I Love Being Catholic

every day, and twice on Sundays.

Go see the Bad Catholic for a list of reasons why. It’s the tip of the iceberg, really. Every new thing I find out about the Catholic Church thrills me. I love this Church. It’s true, which is awesome, but it’s also awesome, which is

The Catholic Church is actually more awesome than this picture. High praise, I know

To all my anonymous readers who fear that I’m staggering around drunkenly, one of the most precious gifts the Catholic Church has given me is the knowledge that the proper appreciation and enjoyment of all the good things God has given us is not excessive, nor sinful, but is indeed exactly how we were meant to live.

I love that about Catholicism. We are charged to love life fully, and love everyone in this life just as fully. There’s no talk of those saved and those damned. Who are we to know? Who are we to judge? There’s just us, humans, beautiful and sinful and stupid and wonderful, loving each other because we were loved first.

And also, there’s this.

“Wherever the Catholic sun doth shine,

There’s always laughter and good red wine.

At least I’ve always found it so.

Benedicamus Domino!”

Up until today, Sienna was working on memorizing Belloc’s “The Yak”. Now she shall abruptly switch gears and memorize this Belloc poem posthaste.

I could go on and on and on about what I love about the Church. It’s treatment of the dignity of the human person. It’s unequalled, unparalleled elevation of women and respect for the dignity of the female body. It’s incredible, staggering diversity. The sacred beauty of the Church’s consecrated people. The way our priests lay down their lives, sometimes literally, for us. The Church’s unfailing defense of life, all life, everywhere. Catholic art. G.K. Chesterton. Irish Catholics.

Don’t believe me? Believe GK, then. Trust me. He’s smarter than you. (And me, and pretty much everyone. Even the Ogre.)

“Catholic doctrine and discipline may be walls; but they are the walls of a playground.”

This guy knows what I’m talking about
