A while ago, I ran an experiment to look at the energetic blocks people carry in their chakras. By experiment I don’t mean in a measurable, white lab coat way. No, not at all. More like this: sitting at home with a pendulum and remotely connecting with 80+ strangers (well, people who like me on Facebook so loosely acquainted) who had volunteered to be energetically spied upon by me.
The chakras most imbalanced in people were the solar plexus, root and throat.
This initial research has pulled me deeper into researching the implications of how personal energy reflects not only the individual’s physical reality but also reality as a human collective. As above, so below, as without, so within.
The throat chakra is about truth and communication. It’s the things we say and it’s also the things we don’t.

Over these past few days, leading up to the new moon, I’ve run across articles about speaking one’s truth or people doing exactly that.
The new moon can correspond with the winter or bleeding phase of a woman’s menstrual cycle. During my own moon time, I find I have less patience, I do not suffer fools gladly and I am more likely to speak my mind. Normally, I have a tightly screwed cap on what I say but at moon time that cap barely hangs on. I have often thought that this time is when truth erupts.
My friend passed to me an article: Going with the flow: why we should learn to embrace feeling hormonal. It talks about periods, female cycles and how these natural changes invoke a change in the woman. We might be more docile mid-cycle but come to menstruation and another version of us appears. Called hormonal now and hysterical in the past, this change could, as I feel it is, be what lies under years of oppression. It’s the true face of the feminine.
The article by Eleanor Morgan ends with this:
“Could it be that, when the mantle of self-censorship drops and we are less caught up with fearing how we’ll be seen, we’re accessing all that historical oppression and, in short bursts, letting it go? All that so-called “excess”, the stuff that makes a woman “hysterical” could just be… truth.”
If you’re a woman, you can probably relate. You know the feeling of not being yourself or perhaps being more of yourself at certain time in your cycle. And you have probably suppressed the urge to shout your truth for fear of repercussion. I know I have.
If I didn’t censor what comes out of my mouth, would anyone like me?
If I said exactly how I see things, would I be ostracised?
Could anyone handle me? Could I handle me?
These questions – based in fear and asked in silence –bolster patriarchy. Because if women didn’t care about the answers and just erupted with truth then things would change. A few thousand years of keeping female voices down hasn’t worked out so well for us.
“All women have a perception much more developed than men. So all women somehow, being repressed for so many millennia, they ended up by developing this sixth sense and contemplation and love. And this is something that we have a hard time to accept as part of our society.” – Paulo Coehlo
Not every woman is born with a womb to experience menstruation and men cannot experience what it is like to live cyclically dictated by hormones. But the moon can be the guide when hormones cannot be. The new moon, the time that represents menstruation, can rise truth to the surface like a spring tide.
All of us, regardless of gender, can use the lunar energy to explore truth and to allow it to grow as the moon waxes. Not only can we find our truth but then we must tell it. Share it. Live it.
It doesn’t have to be the volatile eruption that threatens during moon time (or maybe it does). Keeping the truth inside is wounding us. The imbalanced throat chakra is akin to the silent child – afraid to speak up and burdened with his truth for fear of punishment.
The other chakras show we live in an almost permanent state of fear or anxiety, worried about survival and feeling powerless and too overwhelmed to change. Look at newspaper headlines, they will mirror these energetic imbalances.
And we can’t change unless we can communicate what needs changing. If we can’t state the truth as we see and feel it then we’ve already lost.
But we’re witches and we know the power of the moon.
We know the power within ourselves.
