How Enneagram Type 3 Informs The False Core Pattern 2015-03-02T15:33:12-07:00 Barbara Alexander
Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
In the Unique Self Coaching Process we use the Enneagram particularly because the “cognitive-emotional habit” of each type helps in the discovery of one’s False Core Belief. Each week we are exploring one of the Enneagram types in order to give you a sense of each type’s particular beliefs and mini practices to help you become more aware of your own pattern with the intent of beginning to unloosen the grip of your False Self Pattern.
In last week’s post we started exploring the Feeling Center Triad with Enneatype 2. Today, we’ll continue the journey around the Enneagram wheel with Enneatype 3, also from the Feeling Center. Enneatype Three’s adopt a strategy that allows them to live through a perfected image of themselves and they lose touch with who they are beyond this persona. The False Self contraction in Threes is revealed in putting all their focus and attention to their “doing” to avoid feeling and getting their sense of self worth through being the best at what they do.
Here are the False Core Sentences/Beliefs followed by descriptions of patterns that are common to Threes. If one of these sentences, and/or pattern feels familiar to you, you might want to explore the practices that accompany the pattern. Each of these practices is geared towards creating more awareness of the ways into which you contract. Creating awareness is the first step towards dismantling your False Core Pattern. Practices are most effectively when used daily.
Common False Core Sentences:
I’m incompetent
I’m unattractive
I’m unlovable
I’m not enough
Common Patterns:
Striving to make a perfect impression on others
Observation Practice: Observe during the day how you feel when you succeed in getting a positive response to your image from others. Notice when you need attention, and what it’s about.
Daily journaling:
- What kinds of things do you do to manage your presentation?
- How do you present yourself in ways that conform to the image you want others to have of you?
Working hard with a strong focus on tasks, goals, and achievement
Observation Practice: Observe throughout your day, how you prioritize work tasks and goals to the exclusion of other elements of life. Notice what seems most important to you as you go through your day and observe how attached you are to your “list of things to do.”
Daily journaling:
- What drives you so strongly to get things done?
- What are you ready to sacrifice in order to be the best at what you do?
Doing without stopping to avoid feeling
Observation Practice: Observe during the day the ways in which you keep a fast pace at work and when and how you avoid slowing down. Note what happens when/if you are experiencing strong feelings
Daily journaling:
- How might ongoing activity prevent you from experiencing your feelings?
- What motivates you to keep your feelings at bay?
- What do you suspect these feelings might be about?
Next week, we’ll explore Enneatype Four, the third Point of the Feeling Center. In the meantime, and if you do not personally resonate with Type Three, we invite you to ask yourself who in your close surroundings might be a Three, and how does this description of their way of functioning in the world, might help you understand them better? And if you think it’s appropriate, you might want to share this post with them.
If you are uncertain about your type and would like to take a free inventory we recommend either the Enneagram Institute or Enneagram Dimensions.
We are offering a Unique Self Coaching Process online called: Loosening the Grip Of Your False Core Pattern, which begins April 4th. This six-session course will meet every other week so you’ll have time to engage fully in each practice. Visit our website at www.uniqueselfcoaching.com for more information and to register.
