When Making “Mom Friends” Feels Like Middle School All Over Again

When Making “Mom Friends” Feels Like Middle School All Over Again 2018-09-10T14:18:08-04:00 Ashley Willis

LOGO Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

Have you felt the sting of loneliness when trying to make friends in a new place or during a new season of life? If so, please know that you are not alone. There is nothing “wrong” with you. You will find your people. Keep praying and keep putting yourself out there in social situations and be friendly to those around you even when it feels a bit awkward. You never know when you will meet a kindred spirit and develop a lasting friendship.

For those who are reading this and you are in a sweet season of friendship, I just want to say that we celebrate with you. I, too, know the sheer joy that we experience when we feel like our friends “get us,” and we can just be ourselves, laugh, and do life with our people. It’s truly a gift. Now, more than ever before, I realize this. But, I have also learned how tremendously important it is for us to choose to be includers instead of hovering in our own circles.

Let’s always be open to making new friends while always treasuring our older friendships as well. It could make all the difference in the world to a fellow mom. You could be that one friend who finally makes her feel settled in a new place. You could be that one person who reminds her that God made her amazingly unique and awesome and fun to be around. You could help to lessen the blow of her tough transition. You could turn her loneliness to laughter just by including her and being kind. And, better yet, YOU could make a great new friend for life. Enough with this middle-aged middle school stuff. Who wants to go through that again anyway? Instead, let’s be the kind of friend that we all so desperately long to have and keep.

Want to be part of this conversation? We’d LOVE to hear your thoughts. You can comment here or on Facebook. Thanks for reading, sharing, and responding! Be blessed!
