5. Giving More “Face Time” to our Phones than to our Families
This is a big one. Smart phones are awesome, and we can do so many good things with them. However, they can be real time-suckers that turn into HUGE family life-suckers, so we must be intentional about putting them down when we are spending time with our spouse. If this is something that you and your spouse currently struggle with, then try to get in the habit of never being on the phone when you come home from work. Have a designated place in your home where you both place your phones when you come home, so you are not tempted to check it due to the buzzing and notifications that you can experience when it’s in your pocket or hand. When we don’t have our phones on us, we are much more likely to engage in the real life that is happening all around us. We can lock eyes with our spouse and connect through engaging conversation. And, our marriage will grow stronger and more enjoyable in the process.
I don’t know about you, but I don’t want my marriage to…well, you know, uh, “that word”. Let’s burn “the list,” start using words (instead of non-verbals) to communicate with our spouse, work on making our dreams come true, ramp up the romance, and put down our phones to fully connect with our spouse. We just might find that we can have a much more life-giving marriage after all.
