Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

My husband, Dave, and I have always dreamed about opening a bed and breakfast some day. We wanted our B & B to be a welcoming place where we could host couples and help them to invest in their marriages. To learn more about this business, Dave and I stayed in many B & B’s over the years. Through those experiences, we both realized that running a B&B isn’t for us.
So, we talked and prayed more about it and decided that we wanted to open a wedding venue one day that also had a retreat center for marriage retreats. We decided to keep our eyes and hearts open for the right opportunity.
Well, just a couple of months ago, we came across a historical home built in 1775 that was for sale in a nearby town. The owners had drastically reduced the price. So, we called our realtor and looked at the property. It had everything–a beautiful historical home, huge 200 year old magnolia trees, three large porches and balconies perfect for an outdoor wedding ceremony, an enormous red barn for receptions, and even a guest house. It honestly seemed too good to be true.
We prayed about it, and we both felt like we needed to make an offer on this property. This was IT. Our offer was accepted, and we scheduled the inspection and contractor bids right away. Within a couple of weeks, we learned that this pre-Revolutionary property needed hundreds of thousands of dollars of work just to get it livable–and that’s not including any paint, decor, or furniture. My heart sank as I heard the numbers, and Dave and I both realized that we just couldn’t afford to take on this property–financially and practically– in this season of our life. We were both disappointed, but we still have our dream. If anything, this whole experience made us hone in on our shared dream even more. And, that is exciting.
So, what is your shared dream with your spouse? Have you talked about it in awhile? Have the two of you taken steps toward making that dream a reality?
If not, what’s holding you back? Fear? Money? Timing? Change? Whatever IT is, don’t let it kill your dream.
Pray about it. Talk about it. Keep the dream alive and don’t be afraid to change it up a little. Dream new dreams together through every season of life, and allow your relationship to grow stronger with change.
Thanks so much for reading, sharing, and responding. I’d love to connect with you on Facebook and Instagram.
