- Stay close and connected.
Tragically, we live in a culture that is ultra-connected online but mentally and emotionally disconnected in real life. Therefore, we have to be intentional about building this connection.
We can do this by putting down our devices when we are face-to-face and truly engage with one another. We must set aside some time each day to connect with our spouse. This might mean getting together for lunch during the work day, putting the kids to bed early for some nighttime conversation, or getting up a little early to talk over coffee. Figure out what time of day works best for you both and make that time together a priority.
We may also need to say no to opportunities like frequent dinners and drinks with coworkers after work, having the kids involved in activities every night of the week, or being the room mom/dad for every one of your kiddos. Instead, we need make sure that we spend a lot of time at home engaging with our spouse and family. If we don’t make our marriage a top priority, then everything and everyone else will come before it. But, when we are intentional about staying close and connected, we can embrace whatever comes our way together–hand in hand, heart to heart. Then, we can stay on the same page and walk alongside one another through the inevitable changes of life.
