Unrealistic/Unmet Expectations

3.  Unrealistic/Unmet Expectations

Before we marry, many of us go through some form of pre-marital counseling.  Whether we read a book together, attended a class, or sat down with a minister or priest together, the end goal for our pre-marital counseling was to get to know one another’s expectations for the marriage, right?  This is a good thing, because it allowed us to talk through our similarities and differences and our expectations for the marriage before we walked down the aisle.  But, the longer we’re married, we fail to have these kind of discussions, and this wears down our marriage.

If you’re anything like me, you probably assume your spouse knows what your thinking, how you feel about a situation, or what kind of decision your going to make.  And, he/she might do the same thing to you.  Folks, this is a terrible practice!  Sure, spouses are supposed to know each other well, but we can’t read each other’s minds…even if we think we can.  We MUST talk about our expectations and stop making assumptions, or we’ll set unrealistic expectations for one another that can’t possibly be fulfilled.
