An Extraenvironmentalist

Last updated on: June 11, 2013 at 2:57 pm   By Sterling

"This is what we want. We don't want to be Americans or Germans or English. We want to be extra environmentalists. Always feel that where ever you go, you are a stranger, the outsider, the one looking in. This is the viewpoint that makes all places the same to you." - Terrance McKenna It is not fun to be questioned at airports because my travel patterns look strange. It is not fun to be questioned by strangers about why I "can't" settle down. It is even less fun to be questioned by family members of someone close to me because they are "concerned" that I'm somehow a bad influence on that person. McKenna's idea that there is value in always being the stranger does not sit quite right with me, even as I live that reality. Read more

In Glasgow We Talk A Lot About Weather

Last updated on: June 4, 2013 at 2:02 pm   By Sterling

Last week I wrote about the lack of Spring-like weather here in Glasgow this Spring. Today is a most amazing and gorgeous day. I went outside at about 11am to take out some recycling and to pop into the local shop for a couple of things. I was utterly caught off guard by the fantastic weather. It's not just sunny and bright. It's comfortably warm with a light breeze. It is exactly the kind of weather I'd expect in late March in Oakland, California. Read more

Wrinkles in Space

Last updated on: May 22, 2013 at 12:33 pm   By Sterling

Have you ever been to a place over and over again and then suddenly one day, you notice something that you never noticed before? This is one of a group of phenomena that my close friends and family chalk up to "dimension shift". We say it half-jokingly, half-seriously, because there is a sense of mystery in suddenly noticing these previous invisible aspects of Place. Read more
