Teaching the Gospel in Our Homes: My Sermon

Last updated on: August 25, 2013 at 6:05 pm   By Chris Henrichsen

Today, I gave a sermon about teaching the gospel in our homes. The talk touched on Rawls, King Benjamin from the Book of Mormon, my Chevy Suburban, and lots of cute stories about my beautiful and amazing children. Lyndee spoke first and I make a few references to her talk. Take a listen to the talk here. Or here: Podcast Powered By Podbean I am sharing this talk as part of the Passing on the Faith: Teaching the Next Generation... Read more

Hey, Somebody Wrote My Biography!

Last updated on: August 23, 2013 at 12:16 pm   By Chris Henrichsen

As a socialist, who likes going naked, I am pretty sure this book is about me. However, as a good Mormon, I am suspicious of any book with “naked” in the title. Sounds like it is at least R-rated! Please support Approaching Justice. Thanks! Read more

Pot? Bah Humbug. I’ve got the straight edge.

Last updated on: August 23, 2013 at 10:35 am   By Chris Henrichsen

I really could care less about the movement to legalize pot or pot in general. I do not think it is because of my religion, as much as it is that I am leftist straight edge. Here is the Minor Threat song that comes to my mind when people raise any issue related to pot: Ian MacKaye of Minor Threat, and later Fugazi, explained his song on Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at The Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington DC.  ... Read more

Hugh Nibley is not the Mormon Aquinas: A Clarification

Last updated on: August 23, 2013 at 10:36 am   By Chris Henrichsen

A few of my good friends have challenged my labeling of Hugh Nibley as the Mormon Aquinas in the title of my post Tuesday about Taylor Petrey. I must admit, I was going for a provocative title more than I was asserting that Nibley was in some way the Mormon equivalent of Thomas Aquinas. I have heard Nibley referred to as the Mormon Aquinas. I cannot find a good source to support that. But I am sure that I have... Read more

If Nibley Was The Mormon Aquinas, Taylor Petrey is Our Foucault

Last updated on: August 23, 2013 at 10:36 am   By Chris Henrichsen

Taylor Petrey is the most important voice in Mormon theology and Mormon thought today. He is the Lucinda Hinsdale Stone Assistant Professor of Religion at Kalamazoo College specializing in Early Christianity and Biblical Studies, and is director of the Women, Gender, and Sexuality program. His article “Toward a Post-Heterosexual Mormon Theology” in the December 2011 Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought is a masterpiece. In that article, Petrey offers a deep theoretical analysis of gender conceptions within Mormon thought. In... Read more

I Am No Longer a Democrat.

Last updated on: August 30, 2013 at 11:59 pm   By Chris Henrichsen

Last week, as I obtained my Nevada driver’s license, I registered to vote in Nevada. As I went to check the box for political party affiliation…I decided to switch parties. Being an unaffiliated voter is not how I roll. While political parties and partisanship can be among the most frustrating and annoying aspects of politics, parties are an essential element of a healthy democracy. While our parties might have major problems, not having political parties is not the answer. Before... Read more

Does the U.S. Pay Families When Drones Kill Innocent Yemenis?

Last updated on: August 17, 2013 at 11:48 am   By Chris Henrichsen

by Cora Currier ProPublica, Aug. 12, 2013, 1:48 p.m. There have been nine drone strikes reported in Yemen in the past two weeks – an uptick apparently connected to the Al Qaeda threat that shut down U.S. embassies across the Middle East and Africa. As many as six civilian deaths have also been reported. President Obama has promised increased transparency around drones, but when asked about the strikes on Friday, Obama wouldn’t even confirm U.S. involvement. “I will not have... Read more
