Republican U.S. Senator Rob Portman of Ohio has publicly reversed his position on gay marriage and has come out in support of it.

I really like this quote for the above NBC new clip:

“I have come to the conclusion that, for me personally, this is something we should allow people to do. To get married and to have the joy and stability of marriage that I have had for over 26 years,” said the Senator. “I want all three of our kids to have it, including our son who is gay.”

I have already seen a few people question why he had not supported such a right before. Why not support the rights of all? Well, I think this is a question of moral psychology. We all come to moral judgements in different ways. Love for a child is a powerful force. In this case, it was what led Portman to change his stance. For this, I applaud him.

His position, from the brief quote above, is not rooted in the sentiment that all should have the “right” to marry. Instead, it is rooted in a hope that all can have the “joy and stability” that comes from gay marriage. My support for gay marriage is rooted in such a hope.
