Thank you for your Sacrifice

I spent time over Labor Day on Dale Hollow Lake which borders Tennessee and Kentucky. It was a beautiful weekend, and I saw beaver, deer, bald eagles, and egrets, alongside the fish and hummingbirds that surrounded the houseboat we stayed in. One of my friends watched a coyote walk around the inlet of the lake not more than a few dozen yards from where we were staying. It was a mix of what felt like real “Sabbathing” at times alongside... Read more

Debunking Sacred Forgeries in the Renaissance

Last updated on: September 15, 2026 at 1:04 pm   By Philip Jenkins

I have been posting a lot on the wave of forged and imaginary documents of all kinds that had such an impact in the Late Renaissance, and particularly during the 1610s. People did not accept such things uncritically, and indeed some writers thought quite profoundly about issues of authenticity, authorial identity, and literary “reality.” When does a pseudonymous text become a forgery? What distinguishes a playful literary hoax from a cynical or even blasphemous deception? Today I will be looking... Read more

Angelina Grimké and the Turmoils of Perfection

Last updated on: September 16, 2026 at 10:38 am   By James Bratt

Angelina Grimké shot like a meteor across the firmament of American abolitionism. She first came into view in 1835 with a letter published in William Lloyd Garrison’s Liberator, followed the next year by an Appeal to the Christian Women of the South in 1836 and An Appeal to the Women of the Nominally Free States the year after that. Meanwhile, she was the only woman among the seventy young zealots that Theodore Dwight Weld recruited to proselytize for the cause... Read more

Forging Druids in the Renaissance

Last updated on: September 3, 2026 at 9:14 pm   By Philip Jenkins

To begin with a recent story relevant to my current blog series, which describes how much of Early Modern religious sensibility was invented and literary, and relied on forged documents. In 2025, Ada Palmer published Inventing the Renaissance, which discussed how so much of our modern understanding of the Renaissance uses ideas and methodologies akin to science fiction and fantasy, with all their myths and inventions. Although this is a very sober historical work, I was tickled to see that the... Read more

Was This 400-Year-Old Forgery the First Sci-Fi Novel?

Forging The Chymical Wedding I have been posting about the mind-stretching Renaissance works in which enterprising scholars discovered, created, or forged scriptures to justify their religious and spiritual agendas: the Gospel of Barnabas is one prime example; the Rosicrucian Manifestos are another. One amazing feature of such products is just how very modern, and indeed post-modern, such writings are, in their willingness to break the fourth wall, to implicate the reader in the process of discovery and deceit – to... Read more

Gil Dodds, The Flying Parson

Last updated on: August 24, 2026 at 7:16 am   By Joey Cochran

Gil Dodds ran, and boy was he fleet of foot. During his early life, he found himself in a dilemma questioning whether he could be a great athlete and a great Christian man. Mrs. N. C. Hays, the youth evangelism teacher at the Nebraska Brethren church his father pastored, reassured him that he could do both and led him to Christ during a lesson on Isaiah 40:31.[1] On November 25, 1940 he became Ashland University’s first collegiate national champion. After... Read more

How Modern Citizenship Debates Echo the Reformation

The first part of a guest contributor series by Steven Tyra   You can imagine the hard looks and huffs in the cathedral that day. The preacher had just finished lecturing Zurich’s leading families that their ancestral ties to the city—their heritage of blood and soil—in no way elevated them above immigrants who had arrived only yesterday. Still less did it justify resentment or mistreatment of the “sojourners” in their community. After all, he maintained, “very few families exist that... Read more

American Empire, American Faith

I am delighted to announce the publication of my new book, American Empire, American Faith: Conquest, Christianity, and the Shaping of a Nation (from Baylor University Press). That news is highly relevant here because the project grew in part from a series of posts that I did at this site in 2024 – twenty plus in all. See for instance here and here and here. Actually, like most books I ever write, the newest book grew logically enough from my... Read more

When Pentecostals Took on “Hellywood”

We are living in the belle époque of Christian cinema. While critics may pan them, major entertainment companies now know that faith-based films are sure bets at the box office, and the market niche for Christian filmmaking is clearly expanding. Globally, this is even more true. Nigeria’s Nollywood produces volumes of explicitly evangelical films every year; Brazil and the Philippines have strong Catholic media houses. In all respects, the film industry’s present embrace of Christian film seems like a fever... Read more

Corrupting the Youth? What Universities Are Really For

Last updated on: August 19, 2026 at 5:58 pm   By Adam Renberg

On the Ethics of the University For his crimes, Socrates was put to death by poison—at least according to Plato’s Phaedo. But what egregious crimes had the famous teacher committed that warranted capital punishment? “Socrates commits wrong deeds, and corrupts the young men, and he does not believe in the gods that the state believes in but believes in other things having to do with daimones of his own” (Plato, Apology 24b-c). The educator was found guilty of corrupting his... Read more
