James Bratt

James Bratt is a professor of history emeritus at Calvin University, where he taught courses on early America, U.S. cultural and religious history, and (his favorite) film noir. He received his PhD from Yale University (1978) for a dissertation that became his first book, Dutch Calvinism in Modern America (Eerdmans, 1984), and he published numerous additional essays on Dutch American history. From there, he wrote the definitive English-language biography of the eminent Dutch theologian and politician Abraham Kuyper (Abraham Kuyper: Modern Calvinist, Christian Democrat – Eerdmans, 2013). His current project builds on his critical anthology, Antirevivalism in Antebellum America (Rutgers, 2005), to ask when the Second Great Awakening died, why, and what replaced it. He has received three Fulbright grants, taught for a year at Xiamen University in China, and tries to keep up with four adult children and seven grandchildren.
You can catch up on Bratt’s other monthly articles at Reformed Journal.
