Things More Likely to Kill You Than an Immigrant 2019-02-01T18:19:27-05:00 Andy Gill
Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
Columnist Andy Golder goes on to highlight what one might expect, “As you can see, there have been only three deaths in the US in the last 40 years attributed to terrorists who entered country as refugees. That’s an average of 0.075 deaths per year, or a 1 in (roughly) 3.6 billion chance.
1 in 3.6 Billion Chance Compared To…
- Cows —The CDC, reported that, between 2003–2007, cows caused at least 108 deaths; which is reported to be 21 deaths per year… meaning that cows are 288 times more likely to kill you than refugees.
- Stairs — Around 1,307 deaths were due to falling down stairs. That’s a 1 in 2,739 chance over one’s lifetime (again, comparing this to the 1 in 3.6 billion chance death by an immigrated terrorists).
- Hot Water — According to the Journal of Burn Care and Research, an average of 100 people die each year from burns caused by hot tap water.
- Dogs — Between the years of 1979 and 1994, the CDC found that a total of 279 people died from dog bites which is around 18 people per year.
- Vending Machines — According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, vending machines are 30 times more likely to kill you than being murdered at the hands of a refugee terrorist.
- Bees – Because, allergies. But, the CDC reports that around 100 people die from bee stings, annually.
- Cell Phones — The most shocking statistics for me was that an “average of eight people die per DAY due to traffic accidents as a result of texting a driving. That’s 2,920 people per year.”
- Swing Sets — Parents who don’t want their children hanging around “those foreigners” (trust me, they exist) should then reconsider swing sets. Yes, swing sets… as the CPSC. reports that an average of 20 deaths annually in the U.S.
- Football — One of the more rational things parents and many concerned mothers across the states have been honed in on has been football. It’s not just the likelihood of concussions but, in 2014, there were 16 deaths (six direct, the rest indirect) related to high school and college football, according to the National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research. Over a 20-year period from 1990 to 2010, a total of 243 football-related deaths were recorded.
- And, last but not least is, your bed; as the National Safety Council show that, in the year 2000, oddly enough, 357 people died from accidental suffocation or strangulation in bed.
Again, just to point back to what we’re comparing these numbers to, only three deaths in the last 40 years were attributed to “foreign terrorists” who came into the country as refugees… which means you’ve only a 1 in 3.6 billion chance of this happening to you.
If we’re talking about what’s most logical, the argument that paints foreigners as “dangerous” needs to stop because it’s dangerously illogical.
