Rescuing Jesus: How People of Color, Women and Queer Christians are Reclaiming Evangelicalism
Okay, so I’m restarting this whole “podcast” thing. I’m putting the word podcast in quotes because it’s not on iTunes as of yet. I’ll put it up sooner than later there, but I just want to see if these interviews will get traction and if they’ll be beneficial to y’all.
Most of you know or are a tad familiar with my story of leaving the Church, and the traumatic repercussions of not just leaving, but enduring years of all that evangelicalism is and has to offer. I began to discover though, that I’m not the only one feeling this way. Debbie, is also a member of those that have opted to leave Sunday morning programming. It turns out a vast majority of millennials all the way up to baby boomers have also left for similar reasons.
In this interview Debbie and I talk about her book, story of leaving and why she decided to return. Further more we talk about how those who’ve been traditionally oppressed, and ostracized/anathematized by the Church, specifically evangelicalism, are now reclaiming it.
Thinking back on it, I see this interview and book to be a perfect start as to bridging the gap between where I left off in blogging, and here where I’m rebeginning blogging. Her book is about the positive undertones of how the Church is becoming the Church. It’s not harping on destroying, or voicing a vitriolic anger (which is justified, but in my opinion, not worth the energy) towards the Church or evangelical Christian, it’s encouraging a generation of people to come together and find healing, hope, and community together…
Dang. Isn’t that what Church is about, what life is about?
You can hear in the interview my skepticism, and to be honest, you can also hear a bit of how detached I’ve become from this conversation. I even at one point discuss with her how exhausting it is to enter into this topic, especially when it is so real and personal to me. I just don’t have fun chatting about these issues or topics. It really reminded me as to why I took a step back and out of blogging or writing publicly.
Having said that, lol, it’s a necessary conversation to have, and we definitely end on a positive note.
