The USCCB applauds the passing of a new immigration legislation that would provide a pathway to citizenship to thousands of immigrants. I encourage every Catholic to leave their political banner aside and support this effort that would provide legal protection to many immigrants. I’ve heard many Catholics repeatedly say that undocumented immigrants should be here the legal way or that they should somehow become “legalized.” This would be a “legal” way for them to obtain permanent residency and eventual citizenship. Let us pray for our undocumented immigrant brothers and sisters who are here because they want to better their lives, are working hard to provide for their families and continue to positively contribute to their communities. Most of them love this country as much as any American and the right thing to do is for us to welcome them and help them integrate into our culture.

From the USCCB:

“Bishop Joe S. Vásquez of Austin, Chairman of the USCCB Committee on Migration, applauds the House of Representatives for passing the American Dream and Promise Act of 2019 (H.R. 6), legislation that would provide a pathway to citizenship forqualifying Dreamers and TPS and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) holders.”

“This is a big step for Dreamers and TPS holders who have called the United States home but have been working and living in uncertainty for years.” said Bishop Vásquez. “Dreamers, TPS and DED holders are working to make our communities and parishes strongand are vital contributors to our country. We welcome today’s vote and urge the Senate to take up this legislation which gives permanent protection to Dreamers, TPS and DED holders.”

In March, the USCCB Committee on Migration penned a letter of support that can be seen here.

More information about Dreamers and TPS can be found on the Justice for Immigrants website.
