The horrific anti-Semitic attack on the Tree of Life Congregation Synagogue in Pittsburgh, which resulted in the loss of 11 precious lives, was the devastating yet inevitable consequence of the daily mainstreaming of racism, white supremacy, anti-Semitism, anti-immigrant hate and Islamophobia by President Donald Trump and an extremist minority of his followers.<\/p>\n
Trump began his campaign for the White House by attacking Mexican immigrants as \u201crapists\u201d and continues that racist line of attack to this day with the manufactured migrant caravan \u201cinvasion\u201d by \u201ccriminals and unknown Middle Easterners.\u201d<\/p>\n
The alleged Pittsburgh synagogue shooter blamed Jews for the caravan of \u201cinvaders\u201d and posted on social media about the\u00a0\u201cmassive human caravans of young men \u2026 invading America thru [sic] our unsecured southern border.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n
Two hours before the synagogue attack, the alleged shooter wrote that HIAS, a Jewish- organization that helps refugees, \u201clikes to bring invaders that kill our people. I can\u2019t sit by and watch my people get slaughtered. Screw your optics. I\u2019m going in.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump\u2019s mainstreaming of hate \u2014 and the resulting violence by an extremist minority \u2014 is made possible by the silence of politicians like Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan, who wish to reap the gains of Republican control of the executive branch while avoiding repudiation of Trump\u2019s constant promotion of bigotry.<\/p>\n
It is no coincidence that in recent days, we have witnessed not only the Pittsburgh synagogue massacre, but also the nationwide pipe bomb campaign by a Trump supporter in Florida targeting the president\u2019s perceived opponents as well as the\u00a0murder of two African-Americans at a grocery store in Kentucky<\/a>\u00a0by a man who reportedly tried to enter a Black church before the attack. The Kentucky shooter allegedly told an armed white civilian not to shoot him because \u201cwhites don\u2019t shoot whites.\u201d<\/p>\n
We all saw the alleged Florida mail bomber\u2019s van that was plastered with messages supporting Trump and attacking liberals. In September, in response to one of Trump\u2019s tweets, the alleged bomber posted a video of himself apparently at one of the president\u2019s rallies. He also posted virulently anti-Muslim memes. While Trump didn\u2019t directly engage in these bombing attempts, his rhetoric indirectly encouraged it.<\/p>\n
Donald Trump\u2019s unending stream of bigotry, his dog whistle appeals to bigots and his appointment of anti-immigrant racists, white supremacists and Islamophobes to policy-making positions is placing all our nation\u2019s minority communities in danger.<\/p>\n
The crowds at MAGA rallies shouting, \u201clock her up\u201d and \u201cCNN sucks\u201d \u2014 referencing two recipients of Trump-inspired pipe bombs \u2013 reflect the president\u2019s bigotry and a feedback loop reinforcing his amoral and un-American mindset.<\/p>\n
As with the silence of Republican leaders, the vocal support of almost exclusively white MAGA rally audiences makes Donald Trump\u2019s targeting of minority communities and the media possible, and \u2013 to him \u2013 free of consequence.<\/p>\n
When a Louisiana synagogue was targeted recently by Nazi graffiti, I\u00a0condemned the vandalism<\/a>\u00a0by those \u201cespousing a hate-filled ideologue that should have been consigned to the trash heap of history.\u201d<\/p>\n
That is the problem we face today. The hatreds that we thought had been reduced to relics on history\u2019s trash heap are now roaring back with a vengeance, all thanks to an unprincipled leader who uses those hatreds to his perceived advantage, without regard to the damage he is doing to our nation and its democratic institutions.<\/p>\n
From Trump\u2019s original birtherism and racist campaign kick-off, to his \u201cMuslim ban,\u201d his refusal to condemn neo-Nazis in Charlottesville, to his references to \u201csh*thole countries,\u201d old hatreds are dragged from the fringes and underbelly of society to the mainstream.<\/p>\n
The only answer to Donald Trump\u2019s campaign of division is national unity and renewed adherence to the rule of law and interpersonal civility.<\/p>\n
We must resist the siren call to support our respective \u201ctribes\u201d as a bulwark against the \u201cother.\u201d<\/p>\n
A person once asked the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): \u201cWhat is partisanship?\u201d The Prophet replied: \u201c(It means) helping your own people in an unjust cause.\u201d<\/p>\n
In the Quran, Islam\u2019s revealed text, God states: \u201cO humankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female and made you into nations and tribes that you may know each other (not that you may despise each other). Verily, the most honored of you in the sight of God is the most righteous of you.\u201d (49:13)<\/p>\n
Following the Pittsburgh massacre,\u00a0CAIR-Pittsburgh President Safdar Khwaja\u00a0said<\/a>: \u201cThis attack is on American values and principles of humanity, and we all need to come together to restore civilized values to our society.\u201d<\/p>\n
American Muslim organizations have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to help support their Jewish neighbors targeted by hate.<\/p>\n
It is only through knowing and supporting each other, and rejecting injustice, that we may finally honor our nation\u2019s motto: \u201cOut of many, one.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
