The Aftermath: American-Muslims After Sept. 11th, 25 Years later

The Aftermath: American-Muslims After Sept. 11th, 25 Years later

As we approach the 25th anniversary of September 11th, I’ve found myself looking back at a documentary project that my fellow Co-Producer, Javaid Malik, and I began more than two decades ago.

In 2002, in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, we produced a documentary titled “The Aftermath: American-Muslims After September 11th.”

Our goal was relatively simple: give American Muslims an opportunity to speak for themselves.

At a time when Muslims were constantly being discussed in the news, on television, by politicians, and by commentators, we wanted to turn the camera toward ordinary American Muslims and ask them what they thought.

We allowed our interviewees to speak openly and uncensored about their experiences, concerns, fears, frustrations, and hopes for the future.

More Than Two Decades Later

Unfortunately, when I look back at many of the issues we discussed in those interviews, they don’t feel like issues from another era.

Stereotyping. Bullying. Islamophobia. Patriotism. War. U.S. foreign policy. Hatred. Identity.

These were subjects American Muslims were wrestling with in the aftermath of September 11th—and many of them remain part of our national conversation today.

The political landscape has changed. Social media has completely transformed how information—and misinformation—is spread. A new generation of Muslim Americans has grown up. Muslims have also become increasingly visible in American politics, business, entertainment, sports, media, and public life.

And yet, listening to some of the interviews we recorded more than 20 years ago can sometimes feel surprisingly current.

Revisiting “The Aftermath”

In 2021, nearly 20 years after September 11th, we revisited and updated the documentary.

It gave us an opportunity to reflect not only on what had happened in the years following 9/11, but also on a much larger question:

How much had really changed for American Muslims?

Now, as we approach 25 years since September 11th, that question feels worth asking again.

There has undoubtedly been progress. American Muslims today have platforms and opportunities that were far less common in 2002. There is greater representation and, in many places, a greater understanding of Muslim communities.

But prejudice, stereotyping, Islamophobia, bullying, questions of loyalty and patriotism, and debates surrounding America’s foreign policy continue to affect Muslim Americans.

That is one reason I believe this documentary remains relevant.

It is more than a snapshot of how American Muslims felt after one of the most consequential events in modern American history. It is also a time capsule—one that allows us to listen again to the voices of Muslims from that period and compare their concerns with the conversations we are having today.

As you watch these interviews more than two decades later, consider one question:

Twenty-five years after September 11th, how much has really changed for American Muslims?

I’d love to hear your thoughts.
