Christians & Moderate/Former Republicans Must Reject MAGA
Last updated on: October 26, 2024 at 6:54 am By Julie Nichols
In some of my past articles, I stated we were further outside of a fascist threat but heavily entrenched in Christian Nationalism. Now that we are too close to this reality, I’m writing about it again. The only way to defeat Christian Nationalism currently and avoid a fascist state is to vote Kamala Harris and Tim Walz into the White House and other Democrats into positions of power which I think will happen. If you are a Christian who left... Read more

As a Former Republican, I Highly Respect Liz Cheney
Last updated on: October 24, 2024 at 9:07 am By Julie Nichols
This morning, my husband Grant and I were discussing current events as we many times do during morning coffee. Grant is still a moderate Republican while he respected my move to become a Democrat in 2018. Like me, we both are not Trump fans to say the least. As a former Republican, I’m not sure if many people fully comprehend the acts of courage, bravery, and heroism former Rep. Liz Cheney made during the Trump era and beyond. She placed... Read more

Reconciling LGBTQ+ Family to Traditional Families of Origin
Last updated on: October 18, 2024 at 5:24 pm By Julie Nichols
On June 26, 2015, gay marriage became law-of-the-land in the United States. On that date, 57% of Americans supported same-sex marriage. Today in 2024, 70% of Americans support same-sex marriage, including 55% of Republicans today (Pew Research). A 13% overall increase in nine years is significant. I fall within that 13% of Americans who realizes I was wrong and now realize how important full legal protections are for LGBTQ+ people. My awakening started happening in 2019 but more fully in... We Cannot Return to a 1950s Patriarchal Structure
Last updated on: October 16, 2024 at 8:51 am By Julie Nichols
Five years ago, I had not heard the word “misogyny,” nor did I understand what this word meant. I certainly was naive to the fullness of women’s rights and bodily autonomy. I didn’t know much about birth control, the complexities of abortion, or anything related until recently; I’m serious. I grew up and married into in a conservative Republican patriarchal nuclear and extended family structure where everyone supported this model except a few extended family members. I went to college... Read more

The work of Religious and Non-Religious Progressives
Last updated on: October 14, 2024 at 8:29 am By Julie Nichols
Typically, new writing ideas either occur in the middle of the night or in the shower for me. These days, I’m trying to stay more positive and avoid calling out the dangers some people and groups are posing which I have done many times before. Most recently, I’m trying to give thanks and praise for places of refuge and make note of those who are exhibiting the Love of Christ whether they identify as Christians or not. In my world,... Parents of LGBTQ+, Your Child’s Life Depends on Your Support
Last updated on: October 8, 2024 at 8:15 am By Julie Nichols
When I say the title above, “Parents of LGBTQ+, Your Child’s Life Depends on Your Support,” this is not exaggerated or dramatic. It’s reality, especially in red states right now. If you haven’t been regularly attending PFLAG (Parents of Lesbian and Gays) meetings or the equivalent, I believe it’s important because the other parents will tell you what is occurring in their communities. Parents of faith who have LGBTQ+ kids, if your faith community is not openly LGBTQ+ welcoming, reconciling,... Read more

Medical Realities–Why I No Longer Use the “Prolife Label”
Last updated on: October 4, 2024 at 1:05 pm By Julie Nichols
About 7 years ago, I discovered a prochoice Catholic organization and couldn’t believe it existed, but now, there are some things about it I appreciate. Coming from a red state in Texas and an ultra conservative background, I was just unable to fathom such a group. About 3 years ago, witnessing lived reality in the broader Catholic laity showed me why and my short-lived involvement with pro-life Democrats (big mistake on my part) also revealed a great truth. I largely... Read more

Anti-Abortion Extremism is Harmful to Babies and Mothers
Last updated on: October 2, 2024 at 9:01 am By Julie Nichols
Since the extreme anti-abortion laws were passed in Texas and the overturning of Roe v Wade happened, I have learned some very valuable and hard lessons after some of my experiences and short-term involvements. For those of you who live in red states, you come from conservative backgrounds, and anti-abortion conservative culture is ingrained in your mind, it’s immensely difficult to overcome, particularly for someone my age (53) from that background. It surely was for me. Those that live in... Read more

Interjection into Someone Else’s Interior Life is Not Good
Last updated on: October 1, 2024 at 8:27 am By Julie Nichols
I have come to the conclusion that it’s very difficult to hold a moderate position on a number of issues. Our country is very polarized where people in the middle have a hard time fitting in. But when it boils down to it, I would rather lean on the side of compassion and love than standards and forcing conformity. People may make decisions I wouldn’t make, and that’s ok. People may make decisions that I secretly think are morally wrong,... Read more

Left and Right Extremism; It’s Not About Babies
Last updated on: September 26, 2024 at 9:06 am By Julie Nichols
This morning my husband and I enjoyed our regular coffee hour together. Today’s topic was, “Left or right extremism, which one is more dangerous?” In a study conducted through the National Library of Medicine, they wrote A comparison of political violence by left-wing, right-wing, and Islamist extremists in the United States and the world – PMC (nih.gov). In short, the studies conclude that more violence is associated with right-winged extremism than left-winged extremism. Since I’m not an expert in political... Read more
