My Unique Family Shaped my Marriage, Career, and Me

Last updated on: December 28, 2025 at 8:59 pm By Julie Nichols

I cannot expect the average family to relate to my family, but maybe telling my story could inspire parents who have children with disabilities and/or adult children who came out gay/lesbian or transgender after raising them in a traditional Christian home. Some neurotypical families who have open minds and hearts can potentially become more aware and allies if they wish. My husband Grant of 31 years and I were married in our early 20s in 1994. We aspired to have... Read more

God Protected my Neurodivergent and LGBTQ+ Kids from MAGA

Last updated on: December 20, 2025 at 9:34 am By Julie Nichols

I am publishing this and also sending a copy to some former pastors and a few former Christian school administrators from my family’s past affiliations. Since I need to protect the privacy of my young adult kids, I must be somewhat unspecific. The article will be titled “God Protected my Neurodivergent and LGBTQ+ Kids from MAGA.” After 31 years of a wonderful marriage to Grant, raising our children in conservative churches, sending them to Christian schools for a large part... It is No Longer About Politics; It’s a Moral Failure

Last updated on: July 9, 2025 at 11:26 am By Julie Nichols

When politics are killing people and especially in unacceptable numbers, it is no longer a political issue or a difference of opinion; it is a moral failure. It is also moral failure to turn a blind eye and not even discuss it. When Latino people with no criminal record are being kidnapped off the streets, sent to concentration camps, and being ripped away from their families with no due process, this is no longer political or a difference of opinion;... I’m Not Celebrating the 4th of July Due to the Big Ugly Bill

Last updated on: July 4, 2025 at 4:07 pm By Julie Nichols

Today I am with family in East Texas and had the option to stay home alone due to my Parkinson’s. Even though trips over an hour are quite difficult for me, being alone today, the day after the “Big Beautiful (Ugly) Bill was passed, was less of an option for me. Being alone today would be terrifying for me. For the first time in my life, I will not be celebrating the 4th of July because millions of people in... Read more

Hope and Faith in the Shadows of a Nation Divided

Last updated on: May 15, 2025 at 11:00 am By Julie Nichols

Freedom, Not Fascism Good Morning, today marks a new beginning for me, to try and move forward during a time when this seems virtually impossible. The reality is, moving out of the country isn’t possible for at least part of my family, which includes me. Staying here in San Antonio, TX, standing for what is right and good, and serving others professionally and ministerially are all I can do. When I say ministerially, I mean educating and supporting others who... Read more

A Litmus Test for Following Jesus; Less Theology More Action

Last updated on: March 27, 2025 at 10:40 am By Julie Nichols

Many of you know that I have been struggling with my faith and especially with organized religion over the last five years. I have fought very hard to hold on to my faith in God/Jesus during a dangerous politicized religious climate and my kids coming out LGBTQ+. I’m very thankful I have worked hard to retain my faith in a Divine God who loves the world, but it has been difficult for these reasons, mainly because of how the Religious... Read more

Bible Curriculum and Vouchers Aren’t Good for Public Schools

Last updated on: March 12, 2025 at 12:19 pm By Julie Nichols

I am going to speak out about this because it is wrong. Currently, some public school districts are receiving financial incentives to adopt a Bible-infused curriculum in Texas public schools although it’s not required (at least not right now). I submitted a testimonial against this at the state level just as a did against the private school voucher plan which takes money from underfunded public schools who are already struggling financially to better-fund private schools. As a lifelong Christian, church-goer,... Read more

The Church Should Be Anti-Fascist Like Jesus, Not Complicit

Last updated on: March 10, 2025 at 9:12 am By Julie Nichols

I’m not playing around anymore. I’m not sitting idly by and watching right-winged fascism take over our country, my home state of Texas, and local communities. I will not go down without a fight. Do you want to know how I know this? Come join me for a day in the parent LGBTQ+ community. I am losing a tremendous amount of patience for churches and other Christians who sit idly by and not say anything about an authoritarian right-winged regime... Read more

It is Past Time for Pro-Trump Male Leaders to Come Clean

Last updated on: March 4, 2025 at 9:33 am By Julie Nichols

It’s definitely time. It’s actually past time for mostly conservative middle aged, older white men, and especially ministers, to take some serious responsibility for coercing the voting rights of others since the Reagan era. I am speaking to those men and female counterparts who have coerced their families and flocks to vote Republican since the Reagan era and in recent years for Trump by using the abortion issue as a weapon of abuse to get their way. It is overdue... Read more

The Religious Right Needs to Repent–My Own Changes

Last updated on: March 3, 2025 at 9:23 am By Julie Nichols

I want to clarify who the Religious Right is because sometimes conservative Christians become upset with me when I call out the shenanigans of the Religious Right. Here is a definition from Wikipedia although it’s not always the best source. “The Christian Right (Religious Right) are Christian/Catholic political factions characterized by their strong support of socially conservative and traditionalist policies. These specific political Christian conservatives seek to influence politics and public policy with their interpretation of the teachings of Christianity.”... Read more
