Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
It’s official!! My daughter Janie is engaged to the love-of-her-life, Georgette. I couldn’t be happier about her decision because I adore my daughter, and I adore my daughter-in-law to be!! When I came to an LGBTQ+ affirming position as a parent over three years ago and then shortly after as a certified “out” practitioner, I told my daughter I would love who she chooses like my other daughter-in-law. I have attempted to do so, and I will keep giving my best because Janie and Georgette deserve it. My daughter’s engagement celebration for the purposes of this article is meant as an encouragement to parents of LGBTQ+ kids, particularly parents from more conservative and Catholic backgrounds. For those who automatically dismiss this material, my material is in alignment with every major medical association in the world and in alignment with ministers who have worked with LGBTQ+ people and their families for decades. For Georgette’s sake and the Latino community, I will add the Spanish version below.
For those who do read this column and some of my other secular and ministerial pieces, you will find that the central theme is bringing awareness to the life, health, and human dignity issues of LGBTQ+ and Neurodivergent people, particularly youth, young adults, and their families. Throughout my articles, I bring this awareness mainly as a practitioner but also as a parent at times. I decided that my daughter’s life and well-being are too important to not fully understand and that I must educate and act, so that’s what I did. This journey also brought me to an affirming and certified “LGBTQ+ out provider” position. For those of you who do not know of my professional status, I am an Educational Therapist/Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist with specialized credentialing in Autism, Cognition, Dyslexia, and LGBTQ+ Inclusion in Healthcare.
Many times people ask me, “Julie, how did you come from such a conservative religious background to a more progressive place?” The answer is both simple and complex. The simple answer is, hell will freeze over before I place one more ounce of harm on my daughter by not understanding her, nor will I allow one more ounce of harm to be placed on my daughter by anyone or anything else. Full acceptance and affirmation from parents have been proven to give life and save lives, so I choose my daughter’s life. It is not an opinion but a fact that lives are endangered due misunderstandings, rejection, and unkind treatment of at-risk individuals. Years of inclusion ministry prove this, and years of science and research prove this.
The long answer is, I did my homework to reach an affirming position. For months, I spoke with a wide variety of ministers who serve LGBTQ+ people and LGBTQ+ people themselves. I can tell you undoubtedly that the LGBTQ+ people I know (who are many now) are just like everyone else and deserve to be treated with the same equity, human dignity, inclusion, respect, legal protection, and love as everyone else. When a parent close to my age (52) lives in Texas in a more conservative area, this parent must overcome a considerable number of hurdles to culturally understand and properly support his/her LGBTQ+ child. It’s not just a matter of saying “I love you” but placing that love and support into life-giving action, action which will bring life and health rather than harm and potential endangerment.
The LGBTQ+ issue is undoubtedly a life, human dignity, and personhood issue, not a sexual activity issue. Combined with months of speaking to LGBTQ+ ministers and LGBTQ+ people and their families, I also did a great deal of research and followed the medical consensus as a collective, both as a practitioner and parent. Every major medical association in the world says that one fully-affirming parent dramatically reduces the risk of suicide for the LGBTQ+ child, particularly if the child is transgender.
I’m going to recapture some previous article material which I published for religious and/or more conservative parents three years ago. The purpose was to help save their child’s life because this is what is at stake. If this past conservative and still religious mom can fully embrace her LGBTQ+ child, so can you, parents.
As an Educational Therapist in secular employment, my eyes started opening four years ago when I encountered suicidal LGBTQ+ youth. I have worked with neurodiverse children in the disability community for many years. Because of that work, just as I understand that there are variances in neurology, psychology, and biology in a certain percentage of the population, there are likewise variances in gender and sexuality for a certain percentage of the population.
The LGBTQ+ experience is actually three to six times higher in families with other neurodiversity like Autism. This does not make anyone less of a person but uniquely made in God’s image. I am sorry to say that I was unable to see this truth until under four years ago by making connections and bridges between the disability world and the LGBTQ spectrum. The LGBTQ spectrum is not a disability spectrum but indeed a true spectrum of psychology, not a “gay agenda” or a “personal choice” as so many who don’t know claim over the medical consensus of professionals.
Just as many neurological conditions are intrinsically fixed by the age of 18, cannot be changed, and typically show starting signs in early childhood in many cases, we need to be aware that this is also true for LGBTQ children. The vast majority of medical professionals say to fully support a child’s gender identity and sexual orientation. This support can be critical – when one parent fully supports their LGBTQ children, the suicide rate dramatically drops. You can find a list of medical associations who have all made statements on the subject here. I Choose Life | Julie Nichols (patheos.com)
Fully accepting and supporting an LGBTQ child can be difficult for some conservative parents, professionals, and ministers. The lives and health of LGBTQ people depend on at least one person or parent fully affirming and supporting them along with other professionals and ministers.
Because of this, it was my faith which helped me place the sanctity of life, the dignity of the human person, and unconditional love above any struggles I had. Pope Francis tells Catholic parents of LGBTQ children to support and love their children unconditionally and not reject them as he tells the Catholic Church this. By Pope Francis doing this, it’s projected that Pope Francis saved tens of thousands of lives by preventing parental and ministerial rejection.
From the Gospel, Let’s look at the Parable of the Tree in the context of responding to LBGTQ and/or neurodiverse children. Some of what follows is from the LGBTQ+ group Freedhearts, but I added some of my own good and bad fruit which I have personally experienced as a professional and as a parent.
“Jesus’ parable to answer his disciples’ question about how to know if something is true. Jesus’ answer was, “Look at the fruit. If a tree bears good fruit, then you know it is a good tree. If it bears bad fruit, it should be chopped up and used for the fire.”
When we look at the consequences (the “rotten fruit”) of rejecting the neurodiverse and LGBTQ children in the family, church, and society, we find depression, anxiety, self-hatred, shame, self-harm, substance abuse, separation from God, the church, community, isolation, anger, serious mental illness, and even suicide.
But when we teach that God, the Church, the family, and the community fully loves, accepts, includes, and embraces neurodiverse and LGBTQ+ people unconditionally, the fruit is healing, love, joy, peace, self-acceptance, stable relationships, reconciliation, better health, and life.
Fully accepting and including LGBTQ+ people would be no different than fully including and accepting people with disabilities and/or neurodiversity like Autism. Being LGBTQ+ is not a disability, but it is a spectrum intrinsic to being human. Unless you are capable of life-long celibacy for yourself, you are not qualified to expect this from someone else. Someone’s sexuality is between them, God, their loved one/parents, and no one else. The vast majority of people are incapable of living a life of celibacy without incurring lasting psychological damage or even death. Involuntary Celibacy | Psychology Today
LGBTQ kids need unconditional love and support, especially from other Christians, for their dignity, the sanctity of their lives, and suicide prevention. Love and support from other Christians is seen as love and acceptance from God. Christians rejecting or trying to change who they are is seen as rejection and abuse from God. Jesus and the Gospels were all about love, inclusivity, and defending the marginalized.
I understand that there are debates over this issue, but we must place the sanctity of life above all else. Jesus came for the disenfranchised, the ones society rejected. If we claim Christ’s name, we need to follow His command to love the Lord our God with all of our mind, soul, and strength and love our neighbor as ourselves. This would mean loving LGBTQ+ people unconditionally, using their preferred pronouns and name, and include them, not exclude them. Just doing these things will help reduce the suicide statistics dramatically.
Religious and/or more conservative parents, here are some of my past publications and additional resources which can help you come to a life-affirming position as I did. One of the leading youth LGBTQ+ research-based entities is the Trevor Project. Choosing your child is choosing life; therefore it’s choosing God. This could apply to any religious tradition which teaches us to love our neighbor as ourselves. If you disagree with the science and experiences above, you are disagreeing with the collective of experts and those who have served LGBTQ+ people for decades. Therefore, you are disagreeing with the right-to-life. As my favorite Christian Ethicist Dr. David Gushee says, Christianity is supposed to give life, not take it away. This is why I choose my daughter; I choose love and life.
