Happy Sunday!

In my last post, I wrote an article about my journey of becoming an affirming Catholic LBGTQIA+ pediatric specialty therapist.  Considering how conservative my family’s religious background has been over the last 30 years of my life, arriving to a fully-affirming position as a professional took a tremendous amount of work for me, for my patients’ lives depended on it. In short, affirmation of LBGTQIA+ people is about life, death, and human dignity, not sexual activity. Sexual activity is a very private matter between the individual, God, and their partner, and who they want to tell, no one else. Celibacy is something we cannot force, for involuntary celibacy is proven by science to be damaging and even life-threatening for most but not all people.

As a very dear friend of mine who has a Catholic transgender daughter told me, “When we are more concerned about who is sleeping in whose bed more than we care about who has a bed to sleep on, something is wrong with our ministry and our witness of the Gospel and Jesus Himself.”  “When we are more concerned about doctrinal certainty than about someone’s life, human dignity, and loving the person in front of us, someone is terribly wrong.”

Here is my original article.

Here are two reviews of my article, one by New Ways Catholic LBGTQ ministry and another very similar article review by Therapist News.

You will see the struggle I experienced which was portrayed by both the article I wrote and the reviews from the two authors.

Next time, I will share my professional article co-authored with the help of Father James Martin and his assistant.
