Christians Against Cancel Culture?

Christians Against Cancel Culture? 2022-02-02T14:09:59-06:00 Matthew Distefano

Wikipedia defines cancel culture as “a modern form of ostracism in which someone is thrust out of social or professional circles – whether it be online, on social media, or in person.”

Typically, conservative Christians have stated how they are against cancel culture, calling it everything from a liberal agenda to a postmodern form of political correctness, all the way to an infringement of ones First Amendment rights.

To some degree, I agree with some of it. Though canceling has nothing to do with the First Amendment, cancel culture, in its most insidious forms, goes too far. But I’m not here to offer my thoughts on it per se. I’m here simply to point out some hypocrisy.

Because here’s the deal: Christians are all in favor of canceling people. They just have a different set of “holiness codes” than the Left.

Below are some examples of Christians engaging in cancel culture:

  1. Remember “Farewell, Rob Bell?” That was what prominent Calvinist John Piper tweeted after Love Wins came out.
  2. In 2003, one of the Dixie Chicks spoke out against “the war” and said they are ashamed by the President from Texas. Conservative Christians lost their shit and smashed their Dixie Chick CDs.
  3. When Obama was elected as President, conservatives discovered their inner racist by claiming he was the antichrist.
  4. “Let’s Go Brandon,” code for “F*ck Joe Biden,” is currently all over social media, as well as on front yard flags. If “F*ck Joe Biden” isn’t canceling someone, I don’t know what is.
  5. France got canceled in 2003, for a similar reason as the Dixie Chicks. Some wouldn’t even say the term “French Fries,” and instead called them “Freedom Fries.”
  6. Janet Jackson’s boob got canceled by a conservative watchdog group after it popped out during the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show.
  7. Colin Kaepernick and the NFL got canceled after he took a knee during the National Anthem. Conservatives have obviously started watching the NFL again, but they sure did talk a big game about their so-called “boycott.”
  8. Carhartt gear is being burned right now because they are mandating COVID vaccines for their employees. I talked about that recently here.

I could go on, but I think you see my point. Conservatives, while bemoaning cancel culture, engage in the same tactics. They just do it for different reasons.

So, how do we change?

I have no idea. I’m a fatalist. I think we are screwed. That’s why I just try spending as much time as I can helping my community and my family. If people want to cancel me, it is what it is. I’m sure I’m breaking some holiness code somewhere; I just don’t think I’m popular enough for most people to care. And for that, I’m thankful.

Farewell!
