Heretic Happy Hour: The Journey Thus Far 2017-11-30T21:41:56-06:00 Matthew Distefano
Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
In case y’all didn’t know, I co-host a podcast called “Heretic Happy Hour” with fellow Quoir Publishing authors Jamal Jivanjee and Keith Giles. I must say, even though we are only 8 episodes in, this is one of the funnest endeavors I’ve ever embarked on. Sharing a platform with these fine folks is such a blessing.
That said, I wanted to catch everyone up on what we’ve been chatting about, as I believe the conversations we’re having a quite vital for Christianity today. So without further ado, here is an episode by episode breakdown of our journey thus far:
Episode 1: Heresy is in the Eye of the Beholder
People shout “heresy” all the time these days. But what makes someone a real heretic? In this episode, the boys debate the finer points of heresy and discover how to recognize a true heretic when you see one.
Episode 2: Total Agreement, Unity, and the Nashville Statement
Ironically, every attempt Christians make to achieve unity through creeds or statements of faith only leads to more division. Is true unity possible without total agreement? Why does the Nashville Statement serve as a bad example for the rest of us? How can we hope to find common ground if we constantly define ourselves by who we’re against? This episode explores the virtues of listening to others and admitting we might be wrong about something we hold dear.
Episode 3: What is a Christian?
With over 35,000 different flavors of Christianity out there to choose from, how do we know what makes us a Christian? Is our faith based on what we believe? Or is it more about who we trust in and how we live our lives? What about good people who do wonderfully selfless things even though they’re not “Christians”? Is Gandhi burning in hell? Is Mother Theresa doomed for being a Catholic who prayed to Mary? What if everything we think we know about being a Christian is wrong? This episode explores all this and more.
Episode 4: The Big Thumb of Religion
“Do you kiss your mama with that mouth?”
In this episode we talk about bad language, being offended, and the tension between our freedom in Christ and causing the weaker brother—or sister—to stumble.
Episode 5: Discovering Christ in “Non-Christian” Things
What happens when you find out that Buddhists, Muslims, Sikhs and even Socrates himself, agrees with Jesus? Listen as we discuss the unexpected similarities found in non-Christian places.
Episode 6: Do We Worship Jesus or the Bible?
Is the Trinity made of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Bible? Some Christians think so. Plus, our Heretic of the Week is Brad Jersak, author of Her Gates Will Never Be Shut.
Episode 7: The Elephant in the Room
In this special episode, our hosts discuss how they deal with their own disagreements over theology and what it looks like to extend grace to one another.
Episode 8: The Biblical Canon (Release Date 5 December 2017)
In this episode, our hosts wrestle with the notion of the biblical canon; where “the Bible” comes from and the problems that go along with it. On top of that, our Heretic of the Week is John Fugelsang, host of “Tell Me Everything” on SiriusXM Radio.
So that’s it so far. But we have so much more in store for folks. Not only do we have some great ideas lined up, we have some amazing guests, which include Mike Morrell, David Hayward, Jory Micah, Benjamin Corey, Derek Webb, and many more.
On top of that, we’ll be doing a live recording in front of an audience on 15 December 2017 in Orange, Ca. Our topic will be that fiery place we call hell. Watch out!
