Neo-Paganism.org is now (also) Neo-Paganism.com

Last updated on: September 5, 2014 at 5:51 am   By John Halstead

I’m pleased to report that Neo-Paganism.org is now Neo-Paganism.com !  Come by and check it out.  I’m hopeful that this will bring even more seekers to our community.  There have been two dozen new pages added to the site recently. And we’re continually adding new entries to the Neo-Paganism Timeline, which is now approaching 500 entries, dating from the late 18th century to the present.  Also, we’re still in the “Beta testing” mode, so please leave your comments and suggestions regarding any of... Read more

Call for a Pagan Community Statement on the Environment

Last updated on: April 21, 2015 at 10:27 pm   By John Halstead

Where is our declaration on the environment? Where is our action plan on climate change? We're too busy scattering the proverbial cats to notice that the ale for our "Cakes and Ale" is in styrofoam cups. In 1986, Isaac Bonewits told Margot Adler that, while many Neo-Pagans were very concerned about environmental matters, "Most Neo-Pagans are too loose and liberal to be fanatic about anything, including their own survival." Little seems to have changed. Prove me wrong. Let’s start with a Pagan Community Statement on the Environment. Anybody interested? Read more

Are monism and polytheism a matter of temperament?

Last updated on: August 20, 2014 at 4:23 pm   By John Halstead

It would be beneficial if we as a community would stop looking at one another as deficient because we perceive the divinity differently. It’s natural, when we discover something beautiful, to want to share it, and even to get frustrated when other’s can’t see it. But the fact is that our perceptions are selective. And by attending to one for of beauty, we necessarily cut ourselves off from other forms. The problem comes when we start insisting that our limited vision is all there is to see, rather than a piece of the puzzle. Read more

Why this Pagan cares about the LDS Ordain Women movement

Last updated on: August 15, 2014 at 2:21 pm   By John Halstead

Change is coming. It's not going to come as quickly or as completely as I want, but it is happening right now. And we Pagans have played and continue to play a role in that change. Read more

Single File Spirituality: Community for Spiritual Introverts

Last updated on: August 12, 2014 at 8:17 am   By John Halstead

I need to let go of this abstract idea of what participation in a religious community should look like. Instead of thinking of community as a cocktail party -- which is overwhelming for me -- I need to think about community more in terms of individual relationships. Read more

How the world’s largest living thing made proto-Pagans out of my Mormon family

Last updated on: July 25, 2014 at 8:06 pm   By John Halstead

We need to invite people to participate in simple rituals that will help them form a living bond with the earth. We Pagans can help people feel that. But first we have to let go of this idea that people will magically find their way to Paganism if it's right for them. We need to get over our timidness and our excuses. We need to let go of the idea that sharing our faith is the same thing as pushing it on people. We have something the world desperately needs and, if there is such a thing as sin, then it is a sin for us to hide our faith in the closet. Read more

The Allergic Pagan at Play: “wild” nature as soul food

Last updated on: July 11, 2014 at 9:00 am   By John Halstead

Even while I sat at home scratching my poison ivy, I never once regretted the trip to the woods. I enjoyed every minute of it. And I wondered what it was about this experience that that I find so satisfying. The vistas were beautiful. We saw some fascinating rock formations. And I loved climbing on the rocks. But it was more than that. I just loved being in the woods. Before the trip, I felt a profound longing to get into the woods again. While we were there, I felt like I was right where I needed to be. And when we left, I felt really satisfied, kind of like like I had eaten a really good meal, but in a spiritual sense. Read more

In my last post, I offered a survey to find out who my readers are.  And I found out some interesting things about you … 1.  Over half of you identify primarily as Pagan/Neo-Pagan (35%) or Wiccan/Witch (17%). This was not surprising, considering the makeup of the larger Pagan community.  There is also the fact that I identify as Neo-Pagan and my practice and my thought is sometimes Wiccanesque, so it’s not surprising that my readers would be reflective of... Read more
