Size Doesn’t Matter: 5 Pieces of Advice for New Bloggers
Last updated on: September 12, 2016 at 4:39 pm By John Halstead
My two most popular posts in terms of daily pageviews were a satirical piece that people mistook as fact and a piece about vampires. And two of my three most popular posts in terms over overall pageviews over time were a movie review and a link of dubious provenance to some scanned books. If this was all I had to show for 5 years of writing, I would quit. Read more

Lowered Expectations Is Not the Answer to Bad Pagan Rituals
Last updated on: September 6, 2016 at 9:50 am By John Halstead
Who says that public rituals aren't about transcendence? Good rituals can be experienced on multiple levels at once. And people know transcendence when they feel it, and they know when they don't feel it. And that's why they don't come back. Read more

Gods Save Us from Bad Pagan Rituals: 10 Signs You’re Half-Assing Your Mabon Ritual
Last updated on: September 1, 2016 at 4:18 pm By John Halstead
Good ritual takes us out of our little isolated egos and expands our souls. You can't do that on the fly. Your lame quarter calls and your boring Mabon sermon are not going to get people there. It's better to not do a ritual at all than do a bad ritual. If it gets close to time for your Mabon ritual this year, and you don't really have time to plan the ritual, and you're tempted to half-ass it ... just don't. Instead, start planning for your Samhain ritual this year. And make it a kick-ass this time. Read more

What’s A Nice Atheist Like Me Doing At Gods & Radicals?
Last updated on: August 30, 2016 at 8:44 am By John Halstead
My worldview does not accommodate supernatural beings that exist separately and independently of human beings. In that sense I am an atheist. And yet, my world is full of gods -- from the sun, the source of all life on earth, to the god Indra, the personification of the sun within me. These gods call my back to my true self. And from that place of connectedness, I am better able to resist capitalist disenchantment. Read more

Can “God” be Castrated?
Last updated on: August 25, 2016 at 8:43 am By John Halstead
When we say that a historically male-gendered term is genderless, there is the risk that all we are really doing is normatizing masculinity, i.e., reinforcing maleness as the standard by which all other genders are judged. But while “God” is gendered in most Abrahamic discourse today, that can change … and Pagans can help it change. The word “God” doesn’t have to be gendered, and certainly doesn’t have to be male-gendered. Read more

Neither Capitalism Nor Socialism: A Third Alternative
Last updated on: August 24, 2016 at 8:53 am By John Halstead
Distributism rejects both capitalism and socialism. Capitalism inevitably leads to the concentration of power in big businesses who hold monopolies and exploit workers, consumers, and the environment. On the other hand, socialism also leads to a concentration of power, but in the hands of big government and a political elite. Both disempower the majority of people. Distributism affirms private property, but rejects its consolidation in the hands of an elite. Instead, it advocates distributing property ownership as widely as possible. Read more

Enroll in Living Systems at Cherry Hill Seminary
Last updated on: August 22, 2016 at 8:51 pm By John Halstead
Living Systems Science has its roots in the ecological and biological sciences, and attempts to explain how all living systems work by exploring dynamic patterns of the relationships of organisms with their environment. This class is for the non-scientist who wants to understand the scientific principles of the Web of Life, how the relationships within the web are responding to climate change, and what we can expect given a variety of scenarios.
