Someone said something stupid on the internet … so I went to my altar.
Last updated on: December 9, 2015 at 9:46 pm By John Halstead
Yesterday, I read a blog post that tested my recent commitment to abstain from Internet drama. My habit would be to respond to their post a post of my own, to break it all down line by line, and then hit back with a rebuttal. Instead, I went to my altar. Read more

How Pagan Spaces Become Toxic to Non-Theistic Pagans (Part 2)
Last updated on: November 28, 2015 at 4:04 pm By John Halstead
I present this as an example of the kind of animosity and vitriol that non-theistic Pagans can encounter in nominally open Pagan spaces. Read more

Why Pagans Hate “Witches of America”
Last updated on: November 25, 2015 at 10:42 am By John Halstead
I wonder if perhaps what underlies some of the intensity of the Pagan condemnation of Witches of America is that, in the end, Mar didn't "convert" to Paganism. Read more

“The Great Story”: A Non-Theistic Cosmology
Last updated on: November 20, 2015 at 7:44 pm By John Halstead
"The Great Story" is the 14 billion year narrative of the evolution of the cosmos, the planet Earth, biological life, and human culture. And it is a myth, in the best sense of that word, but one that happens to be literally true; it is a narrative that orders our world, helps us understand our place in it, shows us how to live meaningful lives, and enables us to come to terms with our own finitude. The Mormon Church Leaders Still Don’t Get It
Last updated on: November 18, 2015 at 10:11 am By John Halstead
The fact that the Mormon leadership did not at first consider the situation of children of divorced parents shows how out of touch they are with the reality of contemporary families. But even the "clarification" reveals their ignorance of how complex and fluid custodial arrangements can be. Read more

A “Valiant Attempt” to Bridge the Gap Between Pagans and Environmentalists
Last updated on: November 13, 2015 at 4:21 pm By John Halstead
"It is clear that Paganism and environmentalism are close allies in building a more sustainable future for the planet. It’s as if the two groups speak different languages, and “A Pagan Community Statement on the Environment” is a valiant attempt to appeal to both Pagans and environmentalists at once, to identify common ground and common cause." My Religion is Rooted in the Holy Powers of the Soil
Last updated on: November 8, 2015 at 4:54 pm By John Halstead
My religion is rooted. In fact, it is a religion of roots ... and of tubers and worms and actinobacteria. I am a dirt worshipping Pagan. My gospel is the gospel of compost. Read more

The Mormon Church Punishes the Children of LGBT Parents for the “Apostasy” of Their Parents
Last updated on: November 8, 2015 at 12:45 pm By John Halstead
Mormon children of LGBT will be barred from all of the sacraments which serve as rites of passage in lives of all other Mormon children, including baptism and serving missions. If these children manage to maintain their faith through 18 years of official ostracism, they may then petition the highest authority of the Mormon church for baptism, but only if they are no longer living in the household of their co-habitating/married LGBT parents, and only if they “disavow” the same-gender cohabitation and/or marriage of their parents, something that is not required of non-LGBT Mormons or their children.
