My encyclopedia entries are out
Last updated on: May 7, 2013 at 6:37 pm By Svend White
Well, judging by the fact that Shabana and I just got our modest checks for our respective entries, I’m guessing that Jocelyn Cesari’s two-volume Encyclopedia of Islam in the United States might soon be in a library near you. I contributed 6 entries, which could’ve been a big headache, but fortunately I picked simple easy, uncontroversial topics about which there is broad consensus across the political, academic and confessional spectra. They were: Jihad Democracy Wahhabism Salafiyya Saudi Arabia Headscarf *... Read more

Khaleeji Consumption Disorder and other postcolonial malaises
Last updated on: May 7, 2013 at 6:37 pm By Svend White
There is something profoundly disturbing about the way a few of the more “modern” nationlets of the Gulf seem to frantically write out lavish checks to prove themselves to their former colonial masters and new geopolitical patrons. You name it–if it’s a sign of prestige in the eyes of Westerners, they rush out to buy it, it seems. To the extent of the absurdity bribing African athletes to temporarily become their citizens and run for them in the Olympics. I... Read more

Reluctant “Eid Mubarak” and looking for info on Eid in Atlanta
Last updated on: May 7, 2013 at 6:37 pm By Svend White
A reluctant (but very warm and sincere) Eid mubarak. Reluctant because I’m finding myself forced to drop everything and celebrate today because the Saudi mafia has convinced all the mosques in my region to ignore the duly considered verdict of the two largest North American Islamic organizations and celebrate on Friday instead of Saturday. I get sooo tired of this annual rite of confusion, but more on that later. (Those not in the know, see this article for a hint... Read more

Forget Pig Latin…try Cockney rhyming slang
Last updated on: May 7, 2013 at 6:37 pm By Svend White
Call me chicken oriental, but this septic wants to speak in Cockney rhyming slang. It makes even French’s lively verlan seem staid and conventional. As Ramadan’s end approaches, I’m eagerly anticipating my visit to the riff raff to sit on me khyber for a while with good non-academic captain and a huge, peasy everton. Utterly lost? To be fair, I don’t think rhyming slang generally appears in compound usages like this. Here’s a glossary. Makes me mum and dad... Read more

Those were the days
Last updated on: May 7, 2013 at 6:37 pm By Svend White
From Willard Oxtoby’s World Religions: Western Traditions, page 228: Because of the political implications, the population was intensely interested in theological issues. In the new capital, Constantinople, the fourth-century climate was portrayed by one bishop as follows: In this city you ask anyone for change, he will discuss with you whether God the Son is begotten or unbegotten. If you ask whether the bread is any good, you will receive the answer that ‘God the Father is greater, God the... Read more

Ramadan and Rosh Hoshannah greetings
Last updated on: May 7, 2013 at 6:37 pm By Svend White
Ramzan mubarak to the Saracens out there, and a belated L'shana tova to fellow Semites on the occasion of Rosh Hoshannah. Yes, "Ramzan". That's how we desis (and confused goras) roll. Read more

The Pentagon fighting one jihad, while endorsing another?
Last updated on: May 7, 2013 at 6:47 pm By Svend White
What’s obligatory for the Muslim goose is evidently optional for the Evangelical gander. While pundits endlessly sound the alarm about "Islamofascism" and demand an end to what they dub a "culture of jihad", it turns out that the Pentagon has been shipping Christian "jihadi" materials to soldiers in Iraq! Not to mention working unusually closely (even by the Beltway’s own incestuous standards) with a group that is dedicated to converting Iraqis to Christianity (read the rest of the article). The... Food for thought on domestic terror cases
Last updated on: May 7, 2013 at 6:47 pm By Svend White
Consider the case of Peter Limone, Joseph Salvati, Henry Tameleo, and Louis Greco as you examine the latest sensational charges against Muslims and Muslim organizations today. These unfortunate gentlemen were framed for murder in 1965 with the knowledge of FBI officials. U.S. Told to Pay $101 Million for Framing 4 Men – New York Times In what appears to be the largest sum of money ever awarded to people who were wrongfully convicted, a judge today ordered the federal government... Lars von Trier’s “Medea”
Last updated on: May 7, 2013 at 6:47 pm By Svend White
Watched Danish film director Lars von Trier’s 1987 masterpiece “Medea” yesterday afternoon. What an arresting film. And what a truly gut-wrenching climax–i.e., the filiocidal act of revenge for which this Greek character is infamous–the intensity and pathos of which makes most silver screen depictions of tragedy and suffering seem almost lighthearted. A big surprise for me was how effective its extremely minimalistic backdrop of foggy Jutland marshes was for a Greek tragedy set in ancient times. You barely even any... Read more

The latest gem from Schizopher Hitchens on Islam
Last updated on: May 7, 2013 at 6:47 pm By Svend White
Got into a "What’s wrong with the ‘What’s wrong with Islam’-discussion"-discussion over on Jewcy, a Jewish community blog. Progressive Jewish blogger Richard Silverstein of Tikkun Olam had rightly taken Christopher Hitchens to task for his latest bit of myopic sophistry on Islam–in this case, Hitchens claimed that the word "Islam" is not really related to "peace" because it involves , gasp, "peace through submission". A petty, trivial point in the scheme of things, but with Muslims all mole hills are... Read more
