The number of Muslims in Congress has doubled

Last updated on: May 7, 2013 at 6:37 pm   By Svend White

Indiana just elected a Muslim to Congress in a special election. Second Muslim elected to Congress – Yahoo! News Indiana voters on Tuesday elected a Muslim to Congress, only the second of that faith chosen in U.S. history. Andre Carson, grandson of the late Democrat Rep. Julia Carson, was elected to serve the balance of her term in the U.S. House of Representatives in a special election. She died in December 2007, after serving 11 years in the heavily Democratic... Read more

My latest at Religion Dispatches: “Christian Radio, Muslim Radio…”

Last updated on: May 7, 2013 at 6:37 pm   By Svend White

Snippets from my latest at Religion Dispatches. Religion Dispatches – Christian Radio, Muslim Radio… I spoke today to somebody in South Africa who was preparing to make umrah, or “minor” pilgrimage to Mecca, and was intrigued to discover that she’d won the tickets by calling into her local radio station. I find fascinating how this scenario mixes two worlds, at least from an American perspective. […] For me, much of contemporary Christian radio is philosophically marred by arid binary thinking,... Read more

Zbigniew Brzezinski on the GWOT idiocy

Last updated on: May 7, 2013 at 6:37 pm   By Svend White

A snippet from a great op-ed by Zbigniew Brzezinski, whose name I need to learn to pronounce one of these days. Terrorized by ‘War on Terror’ – washingtonpost.com The “war on terror” has created a culture of fear in America. The Bush administration’s elevation of these three words into a national mantra since the horrific events of 9/11 has had a pernicious impact on American democracy, on America’s psyche and on U.S. standing in the world. Using this phrase has... Read more

Hank Hanegraaff on “Misconceptions about Muslims”

Last updated on: May 7, 2013 at 6:37 pm   By Svend White

Came across some refreshingly evenhanded and principled comments on Islam from an evangelical Christian perspective  ("Misconceptions About Muslims – equip.org")  by noted American Christian apologist Hank Hanegraaff (a.k.a. the "Bible Answer Man"). While he doesn’t name names, he implicitly repudiates the ignorance and hysteria  concerning Islam that have become practically de rigueur on the Christian Right today. Many (most?) of his  colleagues have embraced slander and dehumanizing innuendo that aren’t very becoming in "Christians" worth the name, and Hanegraaff clearly... Read more

India gets into the senior-warehousing biz

Last updated on: May 7, 2013 at 6:37 pm   By Svend White

"Progress" in India. Perhaps we can start outsourcing this there, too. In booming India retirement homes spread – Yahoo! News She grew up listening to her grandparents’ stories over dinner, three generations gathered in the house they shared, like nearly every Indian family she knew. But now that Uma Paranjpe is a grandmother, she finds herself living alone in a small apartment, her children abroad, her grandchildren far from her cooking and her stories. And she’s thrilled. "Grandparents also want... Read more

Abdul Sattar on Danish cartoons

Last updated on: May 7, 2013 at 6:37 pm   By Svend White

Abdul Sattar has a good post on the latest spasm of conflict over the Danish cartoons. [HT: Suhaib Webb, via Mere Islam] Notes on the Cartoon Controversy « “…perhaps they may Reflect…” “God will not change the condition of a people, until they change what is within themselves.” (13:11) It is time to stop burning flags, and start burning desires. Stop yelling in the streets against people who are overjoyed at your anger, and whisper to Allah who will become... Read more

Oil, the bane of Muslim women

Last updated on: May 7, 2013 at 6:37 pm   By Svend White

Check out this fascinating examination of the role of oil in retarding the advancement of women in developing countries like Nigeria and Saudi Arabia. Yet another example of how the contemporary Muslim problems often facilely ascribed to "Islam" or "Muslim culture" can be sociologically explained. That is, if you’re willing to roll up your sleeves and consider them scientifically rather gleefully file them away as ammunition for culture wars. The sooner they run out of this foul "resource" the better.... Read more

Juan Cole on the Serbian attacks on the US embassy

Last updated on: May 7, 2013 at 6:37 pm   By Svend White

Someone brought this kindred observation on the Serbian riots by Juan Cole to my attention. The time stamp on his post is a day prior to mine, but I composed and emailed it to the editor a the day before its posting on Religion Dispatches, so perhaps there was a moment of ESP. Informed Comment: Three Events that changed the World Second, angry Serbs attacked the US embassy in Belgrade. Note that Neoconservative pundits kept telling us that there was... Read more

My latest at Religion Dispatches: “Comparing Serbian Unrest to Muslim Unrest”

Last updated on: May 7, 2013 at 6:37 pm   By Svend White

Religion Dispatches – Comparing Serbian Unrest to Muslim Unrest Things are getting out of hand in the Balkans. A mob of Serbian nationalists attacked and set alight parts of the US embassy in Belgrade on Thursday to protest American and European recognition of Kosovo after the former Serbian province voted for independence (though Kosovo is 90% ethnic Kosovar it is situated in the heartland of Serbian culture and history). Sadly, there may even have been a fatality. It will be... Read more
