Newsweek on the myth of “Eurabia”
Last updated on: May 7, 2013 at 6:35 pm By Svend White
There's an incisve analysis in the current issue of Newsweek of the flawed assumptions that go into alarmist "Eurabia" demographic-threat rhetoric we hear so often on the Far Right. It points out that a lot of the numbers that get thrown around in this debate are not only pure speculation, but speculation by people with anti-immigration agendas. Here's the crux of the article. "Why Fears Of A Muslim Takeover Are All Wrong" by William Underhill (NEWSWEEK – Jul 20, 2009): For the... Read more

Report on the Arabic Blogosphere
Last updated on: May 7, 2013 at 6:35 pm By Svend White
Dustin over at His Peace Upon Us, a thoughtful and recommended new Christian blog dedicated to dialogue between Christians and Muslims, reports on a very interesting study of the Arabic-language Blogosphere. Its title is "Mapping the Arabic Blogosphere: Politics, Culture, and Dissent" and its authors are Bruce Etling, John Kelly, Robert Faris, and John Palfrey. Dustin writes: The Berkman Center for Internet Study and Security did a massive study on the Arabic blogosphere. Who blogs? What do they blog about? You can read... Read more

More from Jihad Watch
Last updated on: May 7, 2013 at 6:35 pm By Svend White
My 15 minutes of fame on the loony Far Right continues. I'm a little late in reporting this–haven't had much time to blog this week–but Hugh Fitzgerald of Jihad Watch also wrote about me recently (2 days ago) to thunder in florid outrage at my refusal to waste my time debating Islamic law with the likes of Mr. Spencer. I have to hand it to him. He has a way with words, if perhaps not careful reading or nuanced thinking... Read more

A thought on how I view Spencer’s fans
Last updated on: May 7, 2013 at 6:35 pm By Svend White
I've gotten some complaints about talking down to fans of Spencer. Not my intent. Certainly, I think you're being had, but on the rest I'm pretty agnostic. Below is a quick response from a few days ago to a comment that expressed offense over this perception (i.e., that I was implying all Spencer's fans to be stupid dupes). John, thanks for the comment. All I can say in all sincerity is that my intention is to attack the ideas, not... Read more

Ilan Halimi’s murderer sentenced
Last updated on: May 7, 2013 at 6:35 pm By Svend White
In non-Robert Spencer related news, I just noticed that the "Muslim" murderer of French Jew Ilan Halimi has finally been convicted and sentenced, though it sounds like some of his accomplices unfortunately got off easy for some reason. According to JTA's report: The leader of the gang responsible for torturing and murdering a French Jew received the maximum sentence for a crime judges ruled anti-Semitic. Youssouf Fofana was sentenced Friday to life in prison and 22 years without parole for... Read more

My response to Spencer
Last updated on: May 7, 2013 at 6:35 pm By Svend White
My emailed response to Mr. Spencer was posted on Jihad Watch this morning. Dear Mr. Spencer, Some corrections and clarifications: First (and perhaps you can be forgiven for overlooking this fact given the number and chaotic arrangement of comments on the blog), I made it quite clear in my contributions that I was questioning your credibility and qualifications not to discuss “Islamic issues” but rather to participate in a forum on library policies and outreach to Muslim communities. Second, you... Read more

Spencer and his hordes come calling
Last updated on: May 7, 2013 at 6:35 pm By Svend White
Sauron…err…Mr. Spencer has turned his baleful, lidless eye to litle old moi. Unlike him, I don't make a living engaging in such polemics, so as fun as it would be to mix it up right now, my response will have to wait until I get home from work this evening. Update (2009-08-09): All the posts on Robert Spencer/Jihad Watch exchange are available on a single page here. Read more

Sense momentarily prevails: Spencer panel canceled
Last updated on: May 7, 2013 at 6:35 pm By Svend White
A small victory for the Forces of Good: The American Library Association canceled the round table on Muslim outreach to which notorious Muslim-basher Robert Spencer had been inexplicably invited to speak. On the "An Open Letter to ALA & the Ethnic and Multicultural Information Exchange Roundtable" blog that was created in protest against this ill advised move, I commented as follows: That’s good news. In a perfect world, Spencer would have been summarily disinvited, but this is probably the... Read more

Joke of the day: Robert Spencer as bridge-builder. (repost)
Last updated on: May 7, 2013 at 6:35 pm By Svend White
[This a re-post. Due to an unnoticed glitch in TypePad, the first version lost its first few paragraphs. Not sure what happened. ] A controversy is brewing in academia over the inscrutable decision by the American Library Association to invite Islamophobe-e-Azam Robert Spencer to address a forum dedicated to, I kid you not, improving Muslim/non-Muslim relations through more effective outreach. You'd be forgiven for assuming this to be a wicked parody dreamt up by the folks at The Onion after... Read more

New comment on Spencer invite
Last updated on: May 7, 2013 at 6:35 pm By Svend White
I posted a new comment to the labrynth of comments on the Spencer/ALA controversy mentioned yesterday. Here it again.—————————- svend Says: July 10, 2009 at 12:48 pm | Reply Incidentally, it’s not just Muslims or traditional academics who decry Spencer’s dubious scholarship and lacking objectivity. It’s even caught the eye of media observers. Take a look at media watchdog group Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR) report, “Smearcasters: How Islamophobes spread fear, bigotry and misinformation” http://www.smearcasting.com/smear_spencer.html There’s no question that...
