Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
We are told to let our light shine, and if it does, we won’t need to tell anybody it does. Lighthouses don’t fire cannons to call attention to their shining- they just shine.
~Dwight L. Moody
Each of us has a light within us that shines brightly. We each have a gift, a uniqueness that makes us, well us. Fear plays a role in denying our light from shining brightly. This week, I really found out first hand this week what it was like to put yourself out there.
For so many years I have hidden me. I hid that I could communicate with those on the Other Side because honestly, it does sound crazy. But the truth was and is that I can and because of a myriad of reasons, people can and are afraid of it. It could have been because they had past experiences with a psychic or medium. Or maybe because of what their religion taught. And then there are those that just don’t understand and lack of knowledge can lead to fear. Each time I give an interview on radio or television, I wait for the hate calls and emails. So you can imagine how I felt before the premier of Restless Souls. I didn’t sleep for three nights and was having panic attacks the day of. It wasn’t only because I was afraid what people would think, but I wanted Ashley’s story told in a professional manner. Not only had she endured a lot in her life and her death, so had her family. To lose a loved one in such a senseless way – well, I can’t imagine, but I can feel and I can empathize. And then to have it up on the small screen for the entire world to see again, the last thing that I wanted to do was to trudge up bad memories for them. What I did want to do was to help give Ashley a voice and I felt that the production company did a good job doing that. Sure, it was Hollywoodized for effect. Not everything was included, but the gist of it was there. After the show aired, I meditated and there was a feeling of relief like when you have a splinter removed.
“I’m turning my phone off, changing my phone number and avoiding the computer for a week,” I told my husband Chuck, who just rolled his eyes at me.
So I was a Scorpio who didn’t like confrontation. Yep, I admit it. After I told the same thing to a friend over chat, she simple sent me two words – SHINE BRIGHT.
I chose to shine because I was helping people. I chose to shine because I offered victim’s families answers and comfort. I chose to shine because I help give victims a voice that they never would have had otherwise. I choose to shine.
Is your light dull? Maybe try one or all of these suggestions to brighten it up again.
- If it feels wrong, don’t do it.
- Say exactly what you mean.
- Don’t be a people pleaser.
- Never speak bad about yourself.
- Always trust your instincts.
- Never give up on your dreams.
- Don’t be afraid to say YES.
- Don’t be afraid to say NO.
- Let go of what you can’t control.
- Love.
- Stay away from drama.
- Sleep well.
- Exercise daily.
- Meditate for 5 minutes a day.
There were no hate calls, and just a few emails that challenged me. I am grateful for a husband, family and friends who helped me take the blanket off of my head every time I tried to hide under it and who continued to remind me that misery comes from disallowing yourself to be who you are instead of confronting your very being. I am grateful that they listen to me and can throw it back to me when I need advice and a pep talk.
Are you ready to shine again? Your shine is there, I promise, just sometimes you have to create your own sunshine instead of waiting for that cloud to move. Just as my friend advised, I will tell you the same, when you shine, shine bright!
Believe,
Kristy Robinett
