I have used Vision Boards as part of my self motivational practice for all of my life, but consciously for over 10 years. As little girls, we unknowingly created our vision boards with scrapbooks, posters on the wall, diaries, journals and stickers. As part of a group I am coaching – Step Out and Sparkle – one of their assignments is to complete a VISION BOARD. They can use a Smash Book, Alter Book, Poster Board or Pinterest. One very inspirational gals in the group had previously lead a workshop on Vision Boards and I asked if I could steal borrow her article. So..do you have a VISION?
Vision Board, Journey Board, Destiny Board…
by Denise Scripter
It does not matter what you call them, Vision Boards are a creative, powerful tool in goal setting and mapping out a course for the life you want to live. You identify your desired life and then live with intention to achieve the life you want.
The process is really very simple…
Sometimes we don’t consciously know what we want in life (or maybe we do know, but don’t know how to obtain it), so we need a little help with inspiration. Gather a stack of magazines, a wide variety of magazines. With a cup of tea (or coffee, or wine…) in hand, thumb through each magazine, stopping only long enough to tear out an image that piques your interest. Do not judge content at this point. Go only by your gut feeling. If you like the image, out it comes and onto the pile it goes. Words or phrases that strike a cord with you go onto the pile as well. You will be amazed at this process. Go with it. Have fun with it. Goals will be discovered. Themes will present themselves. Mysteries will be revealed.
So, now what…
This is when the fun and enlightenment really begins.
“On this poster board, you paste or collage images that you’ve
torn out from various magazines. The images can be very
specific – as in my house example. Or they can be images that
evoke a feeling – like a picture of a woman meditating that
makes you feel deeply peaceful. It’s simple.
The truth behind this technique is this:
When you surround yourself with images of who you
want to become, what you want to have, where you
want to live or vacation, your life changes to match
those images and those desires. Your attention is that powerful.”
The Complete Guide to Vision Boards ebook by Christine Kane
Wow, what a pile…
Ok, boy do you have a pile. Good. Start by sorting your images. Are there things you want to achieve, own, collect, do, BE? Pull your favorite images and words out and place them into a separate pile. Sorting is all about intuition. Do any of the images not seem right, don’t belong somehow? Trust your instinct. Maybe they do not hold a place in your vision of the life you want. Some things might need to be eliminated. This is not a bad thing. Trust yourself to know what to keep and what to let go.
Artfully arrange…
No, you do not need to be an artist for this part of the process. Don’t be shy. Start by laying the pictures on your poster board or canvas. Be random, or be specific, what ever feels right to you. You will notice as you do this, you’ll get a sense of how the board should look, what the lay-out should be. Having trouble? Christine Kane suggests “you might assign a theme to each corner of the board: Health, Business, Spirituality, Relationships.” This can be very helpful. Some people like to use a representation of themselves, either painted, photograph or magazine image, on the board as a way to claim it as their own.
Time for the glue…
Think back to kindergarten. Wasn’t paste the best? Channel your inner child. Once you’ve arranged your images in a way that speaks to you, glue everything onto the board. I like to use rubber cement because it doesn’t wrinkle, but what’s wrong with a few wrinkles anyway??? There are glue sticks on the market that are “anti-wrinkle”. Take your time. If you get a few bumps, well, bumps are a part of life, right? Sometimes the side of a credit card can help smooth the image onto your board.
Embellish…
Or not. It’s up to you. Decorative touches and mementos can add a lot to your board. Think antique button from Grandma’s button box, a piece of lace from your scrap box. GLITTER. You can paint on your board. You can write words with gel pens. Add anything that will make your board YOURS. Go for it!
Hang in there baby…
Hang your Vision Board. Place it where you will see it everyday. That might be in your kitchen, bathroom, office, or even your closet if you are shy. By seeing your vision everyday you reinforce your intention. You confirm the life you want and then you attract the life you want.
Action…
Now action does not have to be hard, busy, or tiring. It means being conscious in your daily life. If you take one step toward your dream, it will surely take two steps toward you in response. This could be something small like acknowledging your desire everyday, or large like going back to school. Action will always have a reaction. Positive attracts positive, negative attracts negative. That is an element in the law of attraction.
Vision Boards can be an important tool in your “successful life tool box”. They have the power to help you clarify what you want in your life. Your dreams can be your reality.
