“Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness. It took me years to understand that this too, was a gift.”
― Mary Oliver
I think it is safe for me to say that we have all experienced a sad time in our life when we never thought the sun would shine again. The darkness, like a ghoul hiding in the closet, affirmed that nothing could ever get better and only scarier, ghoulish, things would continue to happen. But then the sun eventually came out and the sadness around our soul once again lifted and we realized that the situation could either be dealt with, or it wasn’t as bad as we originally thought.
When reading Tarot, the Death card by novices is often looked at as a scary, bad thing, but in reality the Death card represents transformation and change. We each experience death many times over within our life: a lost job, a lost loved one, and even the loss of ourselves. In order to live, we must transform, sometimes conform, and best of all become enlightened from the previous life deaths and sad times.
“It is impossible to grasp another human’s inner world. But even in the darkness of the densest forest
-Krupakar
This week I was in Los Angeles (my first time). I was chatting with a store clerk about Michigan and she said to me, “It must be great to live in Michigan. To see the seasons change and to not always see sunshine every day.” I wholeheartedly agreed with her. Although the weather was beautiful in California, I missed my Michigan leaves (and didn’t even complain when we came home to a lawn filled with them) and the rainy afternoons. We forget sometimes that in order to see the stars, we have to have darkness. In order to hear what our soul needs, we have to have silence. And in order to have change, we need to first allow what isn’t working in our life to leave. Even though we don’t always understand why we have to go through the pain, at one point in time it begins to make sense and we know that we are in the right situation, and not the just the one we want to be the right one.
I wish I had the magic wand to make all the hurt go away, but I know that no matter what the experience and situation there is always the ability for healing and finding a new-normal, a new way, and sometimes even a better way. Today, spend time in nature. Quiet your body, mind and soul and listen. Really listen. An understanding of the situation may then come to you, and healing may then begin.
”Ever felt an angel’s breath in the gentle breeze? A teardrop in the falling rain? Hear a whisper amongst the rustle of leaves? Or been kissed by a lone snowflake? Nature is an angel’s favorite hiding place.”
– Carrie Latet
