Inch by Inch, it’s a Cinch!

Last updated on: July 31, 2011 at 9:36 pm   By Cynthia Schrage

But yard by yard, life is hard. That’s a terrific saying, but I have a hard time remembering it. That’s why I tend not to do the dishes until we have almost none left in the cupboard. I know, I know, it’s a bad habit. It’s not like we have A LOT of dishes—it’s just my daughter and I. (No need to call the Board of Health!) It’s just that I really hate to do them. No, that’s not true.... Read more

Stuff Catholics Like: Love Wins (Part 2)

Last updated on: July 30, 2011 at 3:50 pm   By Cynthia Schrage

This is the second part of a two part article/review of Rob Bell’s newest book, Love Wins: A Book About Heaven, Hell, and the Fate of Every Person Who Ever Lived, and if you haven’t read yesterday’s entry, you need to, otherwise this will seem disjointed and probably make no sense. Case in point: In the realm of public opinion, there are so very few people who fall so strongly in the good camp that I can only (easily) think... Read more

Stuff Catholics Like: Love Wins (Part I)

Last updated on: July 29, 2011 at 11:26 pm   By Cynthia Schrage

If you haven’t already figured it out by some of my earlier blog entries, I’m a Catholic. Depending on which school of thought you fall in, that usually (but not necessarily) makes me one of the following: A member of the only true Church; A member of one of the Christian denominations; Not a Christian, but making some, albeit misguided, effort towards Jesus; or In league with Satan. Given these possibilities, my review of Rob Bell’s book Love Wins: A... Read more

Dental Distractions

Last updated on: July 28, 2011 at 9:30 pm   By Cynthia Schrage

I’ve been experiencing some dental distractions this week, and it’s rendered me more than decidedly lethargic. Combined with the ongoing sauna-like weather we’ve been having, I’ve not been much for writing. Also, I just finished the new Rob Bell book, Love Wins, this evening. It’s so provocatively good that it deserves to be written about in a far finer fashion that I’m going to have time for tonight. Read more

All Night Long…

Last updated on: July 23, 2011 at 9:39 am   By Cynthia Schrage

Apparently, disaster preparedness is prophylactic in nature; designed, variously, to prevent pain, prevent sleep, or prevent pregnancy. Or that’s what this display at a gas station I went to yesterday might have you believe. Turning down this aisle from a previous one that included the usual blend of snack foods whose ingredients fall into one of two general categories (sugar or salt), I couldn’t help but laugh. I pulled out my camera so I wouldn’t forget what has to be... Read more

Witheringly hot…

Last updated on: July 19, 2011 at 10:48 pm   By Cynthia Schrage

It’s too hot here to do anything….even write. It’s now 10:25pm and it’s still 82 degrees (28 Celsius) out! I feel like a wet rag—limp and not very fresh. Yuck. It’s been like this for a couple of days now and there won’t be a respite for days yet. Blah… The heat index (Makes sense! After all, we have wind chill…) says that it’s 88 degrees here now. It’s actually hotter here than in the Florida panhandle. I do have... Read more

Stuff Catholics Like: Parish Festivals

Last updated on: July 16, 2011 at 3:23 pm   By Cynthia Schrage

Church festivals are perhaps the most underrated form of entertainment ever. For just a few dollars, there’s food and frolic that beats anything else around. Even if you do nothing but people watch, there’s usually some shenanigans that’ll make you laugh. Today is our parish festival at Saint Joseph’s and I popped over for a couple hours this afternoon. What a riot! I talked with a bunch of people I hadn’t seen in a while, tasted some beverages that I’d... Read more

Walking On Sunshine, or, Out of the Tar Pit

Last updated on: July 15, 2011 at 11:57 pm   By Cynthia Schrage

No day in La Brea for me today! No, ma’am! I did everything I could to make the rest of yesterday be more positive, and it must’ve helped, because I got a good night’s sleep, woke up happy, and felt happy all day. One thing that made a huge impact was revealing that I was depressed, both via this blog, and Facebook. One of the traps of depression is the belief (strong, but mistaken) that nobody cares and that nobody... Read more

Life at La Brea; or Spiraling Down

Last updated on: July 14, 2011 at 1:49 pm   By Cynthia Schrage

Being depressed is like being in a tar pit. I’m not sure if this picture really gives the best impression. For me, there is definitely no cute baby I’m trying to protect. But aside from that, the feeling that every kind of nasty creature, with very big teeth, is scarily accurate. That this picture is gray scale only heightens the colorlessness of my life right now. Some people are probably thinking, “Well, you can’t be too depressed, if you’ve got... Read more
