The Incredible Power of Sacrifice

Last updated on: July 19, 2013 at 10:31 am   By marcusbrotherton

As a prisoner of the Imperial Japanese Army in the jungles of Thailand during WWII, Ernest Gordon, a commander in a Scottish infantry battalion, saw firsthand the depths of depravity that can happen when man sinks to his lowest. At age 24, Gordon was captured while escaping from Sumatra after the fall of Singapore. With other prisoners he was marched into the jungle to build the notorious bridge on the River Kwai. Starvation, beatings, disease, and dawn-to-dusk slave labor... Read more

Sex Ain’t Love–But it’s Better If You’re Married!

Last updated on: August 14, 2013 at 11:44 pm   By rickjohnson

Sex isn’t love.  You can have sex and not be in love (men and women do it all the time).  Just because you sleep with someone does not mean you are in love with them.  And guys (in case you were wondering) sleeping with a lot of different women does not make you a man. Ladies, sleeping with a man does not mean he will love you. Sex is one expression of love, but not the only one.  Our culture... Read more

Are You TOO Nice?

Last updated on: July 19, 2013 at 10:26 am   By marcusbrotherton

Years ago I worked alongside a difficult co-worker. This young man seldom had anything good to say to anybody. He was affable when he wanted to be. But he often interacted with people using sarcasm or putdowns. His favorite salutation, one used co-workers and even sometimes customers, was, “How’s Dummy today?” For the first while I found myself giving this man the benefit of the doubt. His behavior irked me, yes. But I constantly dismissed his actions, explained them... Read more

4 Odd Ways to Look at Marriage

Last updated on: August 7, 2013 at 10:36 pm   By rickjohnson

Falling in love is the easy part.  But staying in love takes work and intentionality.  Here are four tips that will help your marriage stay healthy and last a lifetime: Look at the Big Picture Part of the fun of a long term relationship (of any kind) is the growing together through shared experiences, suffering together through difficulties and heartbreaks, and experiencing the joy of mountain top encounters together.  But getting through the challenges of life together as a couple... Read more

In the same way WalMart took over the mom-and-pop store, a handful of megachurches will absorb thousands of other congregations – including other megachurches. They’ll do it by planting satellite campuses in thousands of cities and towns in America, delivering their teaching and music via video. Read more

Do Only Men of Faith Achieve Greatness?

Last updated on: July 31, 2013 at 12:09 pm   By rickjohnson

I was raised in an alcoholic home with all the disadvantages that environment brings with it. I was raised to believe that religion was a crutch for weak people and that all Christians were hypocrites. By the age of forty, after attaining all that the world says should make you happy and successful, I found myself yearning for more. Something was missing. I had a hole in my soul that could not be filled by success, achievement, or materialistic acquisition.... Read more

Church growth: it’s all about the pastor

Last updated on: July 31, 2013 at 12:45 am   By David Murrow

Can I be brutally honest? When it comes to church attendance, nothing matters as much as the ability of the pastor to deliver good sermons. If a pastor is a good speaker the church grows. If he’s a bad speaker the church shrinks. Read more

How to Be a Man of Awe

Last updated on: July 19, 2013 at 10:19 am   By marcusbrotherton

“Dad,” said my 9-year-old daughter, Addy. “Some kid in the park asked me if you’re a celebrity. Are you?” “What did you say?” I asked, curious about how she answered the question. “That you sign autographs, speak all over the place, and write all those boring books for grownups. So I guess that makes you a celebrity.” I could see pride in my daughter’s face. As well as uncertainty. “Well … maybe I’m sort of a celebrity to a... Read more

What Does a Man Look Like?

Last updated on: July 25, 2013 at 10:39 pm   By rickjohnson

Last week we talked about young men thinking that they didn’t feel like men.  My advice to them was if they wanted to feel like a man they had to act like a man.  And the natural question that follows is, “What does a man act like?”  The following touches on just one example of how a man acts and faces life. First of all, as men we have to stop being ashamed of our gender, of the way God... Read more
