Learning from the Beyonce Super Bowl

Learning from the Beyonce Super Bowl 2014-01-29T14:39:44-07:00 Jonathan McKee

Young people across the world listened to her music on their phones, they watched her videos on YouTube, and then she performed at the Super Bowl halftime show… and their parents freaked out!

When Beyonce began thrusting her hips at the Super Bowl halftime show last February, parents all over America began scurrying their kids out of the room. I heard it from parents across the country:

“Imagine my surprise when I saw that on our television screen!”

“I was completely shocked!”

Perhaps these parents have had their heads in the sand for the last decade.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying Beyonce’s performance wasn’t offensive, inappropriate or irresponsible. It was truly all of the above. But “shocking”… “surprising”… not hardly. Beyonce has been doing these moves as long as I can remember. Sadly, most parents just aren’t paying attention to what their kids are watching on their screens each day.

Let me say it a little more clear. Most parents don’t have a clue what’s in their kids’ phones.

So, sure… shame on Beyonce. But really… shame on parents who didn’t take the time to Google some Beyonce lyrics or click on the “so-called appropriate” videos of hers readily clicked by young people on YouTube.

Try it today. Jump on iTunes or YouTube and click on some of her music videos. Not the ones that have the “E” for explicit… click the other ones—the “clean” ones. Jump on iTunes and click on the 30-second preview for the “clean” music video titled Yonce’. It’s been in the top 10 on iTunes for the last month.

And before you tell me, “I would never click on that!” … let me ask you a more important question. Would your kids click on this iTunes image if they saw it on their phone?

So what about this year’s Super Bowl?

Do you know who’s performing?

Do you know what to expect?
