This month, I’ve been focusing on National Bullying Prevention Month.

For me, this is a very personal cause.

I’ve been bullied; I know how it feels.

I know what it’s like to feel utterly powerless, to feel like there’s no one to turn to for help.

Don’t expect bullied children to come to you and tell you what’s going on. Very few, if any, will do that.

Why?

They’re afraid that if they “tell,” it will only get worse.

Most of the time, they’re right.

There’s only one way to put a dent in bullying.

When my kids were little, we watched the Disney-Pixar film, A Bug’s Life. In it, an ant is trying to save his colony from a swarm of “bullying” grasshoppers. Feeling powerless, he recruits a group of warrior bugs to help. Unfortunately, the warrior bugs turn out to be nothing more than circus performers. All seems lost until [spoiler alert] the ants realize that there is power in numbers. As all of the ants rise up together, they are able to overthrow the grasshoppers.

That’s how you stop bullies.

As more and more young people and adults become aware of the problem. As they stand up and say, “We’re not going to put up with this.” As they come alongside their bullied peers to support, encourage, and stand behind them, they can put a dent in bullying.

I’ve pulled together a some of the best anti-bullying resources from across the Web. I hope you’ll check some of these out and, over the next year, do your part in raising awareness of the problem of bullying:
