Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
“As I read John Newton, he reminds me that I need Christ.”
Last updated on: July 31, 2026 at 6:57 am By Adrian Warnock
What makes a person read an entire multi volume edition of a 300 year-old preacher’s published works? Keith Pummer kept reading because Newton kept leading him to Jesus as he read a small portion day after day. It took long-term discipline and commitment until he got to the end. There is something profoundly counter-cultural about that image of someone deciding to take on a task like that and step by step progress through the journey he had set for himself.... Read more

John Newton Struggled with Prayer Just Like You and Me

"I find vanity engraved in capital letters, on myself and everything around me. I am surrounded by mercies, and so completely satisfied with my outward condition, that I could hardly wish a single circumstance changed. Yet I feel emptiness, and so I sigh and groan." Read more

Newton: “I am a riddle to myself, a heap of contradictions”
Last updated on: July 27, 2026 at 10:17 pm By Adrian Warnock
Some might think that Newton’s previous assessment of himself which we discussed in the last post was that of a relatively young Christian. Did things change? In this letter written in 1772 we see that his impression of himself didn’t improve, if anything he had grown to understand himself even better, and did not like what he saw. In his introspection he does not become condemned and passive, however. I love his phrase “here hope revives”. What gives you... Read more

Newton on Fellowship with other Christians and God Himself
Last updated on: July 23, 2026 at 4:35 pm By Adrian Warnock
I’ve been thinking just a little bit about how little we value real communion with God today. Well, let’s speak personally about this, how little that I value truly knowing God. How often do we all spend our time with other people devoted purely to leisure or idle conversation, rather than to help one another to know God. I want to share with you a letter that John Newton wrote about this. He wrote it after one of his many visits to Yorkshire, where he... Read more

Would a wretch like John Newton be welcome in our churches?
Last updated on: July 31, 2026 at 6:55 am By Adrian Warnock
It was a real joy to recently interview Daniel Johnson, who leads the Theology and Worship degree at London School of Theology. I noted that some separate these concepts today, to which Daniel replied, “Theology and worship are totally connected. The more we know about God through theology, the more that pours out in worship.” We could add to that, the deeper our worship, the more theology we learn through the experience. Watch the full interview and read the transcript... Read more

Elijah’s Healing: Ancient Biopsychosocial-spiritual Example
Last updated on: June 30, 2026 at 1:41 am By Adrian Warnock
The multifaceted kindness of God. Elijah had a huge moment of crisis. You might be surprised to realize that God responded by using a biopsychosocial-spiritual approach. God may not have used those terms, but he had that understanding of Elijah. He deals with him as a whole person and brings healing into every domain. Whatever Happened to the Young, Restless and Reformed?
Last updated on: June 25, 2026 at 12:15 am By Adrian Warnock
Looking back, the Young, Restless and Reformed movement was about technology as much as it was about theology. Aaron and I were both bloggers. Younger readers may not even remember blogs, but in the early 2000s they created something remarkable. Ordinary Christians could publish their thoughts, interact with one another, challenge ideas, and build friendships across denominational and geographical boundaries. Read more

The Real Father’s Day Nobody Would Put on a Card
Last updated on: June 21, 2026 at 3:14 pm By Adrian Warnock
This Father’s Day, I know it will be a difficult day for some of you. Perhaps your father has died, and you are left without him. Perhaps you had a father who wasn’t really involved in your life and left when you were a child. Maybe you never even knew your father. Or perhaps you are a father, but your relationships with your children are difficult or non-existent today. Forgiveness is needed in every single family or else it will... Read more

The Andy Burnham Bounce is Real. What next for UK Politics?
Last updated on: June 19, 2026 at 3:21 pm By Adrian Warnock
Does loyalty mean it is never right to challenge a leader? Unusually for me I have recorded an “emergency podcast” to mark a significant news event in the UK. In this video podcast, I discuss the differences between an American system of a directly elected president, who seems to be impossible to remove, and ours parliamentary system, where prime ministers are regularly fired by their own party’s elected representatives. In the end it will be Labour MPs who decide whether... Read more

Video Podcast: How Faith Alone Misses Real Healing
Last updated on: June 19, 2026 at 8:41 am By Adrian Warnock
30+ years in the making. The model that has shaped my whole life, professional and personal. In this podcast video, and the long form article that accompanies it I ask, How can a Biopsychosocial-spiritual Approach Help me? It is my clearest attempt yet to explain what I mean by the four-legged stool approach to suffering. I have used this for decades during in my own difficult times, with patients as a doctor and psychiatrist, and with church members I was trying to help pastorally. Whether you are a health professional, social worker, pastor, concerned friend, or someone who is struggling right now, here is a framework that will hopefully guide first steps towards healing.
