Well, here’s an awkward situation that reveals just how far the culture needs to go in order to not ostracize women. A magazine was hosting an event that celebrates and encourages “social change,” so it invited Monica Lewinsky to attend. However, when former President Bill Clinton RSVP’d her invitation was withdrawn.
Lewinsky, who notorious when her “inappropriate relationship” with then-President Bill Clinton between 1995 and 1997, mysteriously tweeted “dear world: please don’t invite me to an event (esp one about social change) and –then after i’ve accepted– uninvite me because bill clinton then decided to attend/was invited. it’s 2018. emily post would def not approve. Me”
dear world:
please don’t invite me to an event (esp one about social change) and –then after i’ve accepted– uninvite me because bill clinton then decided to attend/was invited.
it’s 2018.
emily post would def not approve.
People were confused by the tweet, but The Huffington Post helpfully filled in the details. Apparently, the event in question was Town & Country Philanthropy Summit, and I’m thinking these host purporting to teach the world about “social change” might have some changing they need to do, too. Uninviting Lewinsky was exactly the wrong move. After the affair, her stock plummeted, as she was ostracized as a villain. Clinton’s reputation didn’t suffer. He became the patriarch of the Democratic party and has never really faced any consequences for his many issues with women.
(By “issues,” I mean he has been credibly accused of rape.)
“President Clinton was invited to address the Town & Country Philanthropy Summit,” press secretary Angel Ureña tweeted. “He gladly accepted. Neither he nor his staff knew anything about the invitation or it being rescinded.”
Regardless, this was precisely the wrong thing to do. Movie producer Judd Appatow was furious on Twitter. “This is what everyone is fighting against. @townandcountry should be ashamed of themselves. Do they let their heads of the magazine prey on their interns? Would they disinvite them after abusing their power to get what they wanted from them?”
Agreed. Now that women are finally letting their voices be heard on matters of sex and abuse, it’s time to force Bill Clinton to face the consequences of his actions.
